Anyone seen or tried the new 6.5 PRC in a Handgun. I am looking to get a Encore pistol for long range hunting/shooting and seen MGM barrels has this on there chambers list. Rifle gets 2960fps with 140gn bullet, so maybe 2800fps out of 15" handgun barrel?

That figure is going to be close. I am curious as to what twist MGM is using ? 1-7 or 1-8 ?
Also I have not seen any load data on this cartridge and I would be curious what powders has given the best performance ?

MGM test barrel is with a 1:8 twist. Looks Like Magnum powders like Retumbo, H1000, RL-22, IMR 4831 work best. May be different for shorter barrel.

I would think that if you stayed with a 140gr Partition or Amax that would work great. (1-8) for hunting

The powders usually change with the weight gr of bullets. not so much the length of barrels.

I HOPE SOMEONE HERE GETS A 15 - 16 INCH ENCORE BARREL IN 6.5 PRC AND REPORTS ON VELOCITIES AND ACCURACY. WHAT MV COULD YOU GET WITH A 125gr PARTITION? OR A 120gr SIROCCO? OR.....?

I got a reply from MGM and they have been testing rifle length barrels in 6.5 PRC with great results. They will also test pistol length in the near future. I may order a 15" Encore barrel and shoot factory ammo until some published hand load data comes out.

45 Man Here is a little info for you . This is not exact but I am going to be close. This should give you a better idea. I am going to base these figures on what was given to us by Hendog using the powders he stated.
1 H1000 24" 3012 FPS 15" 2585 FPS 50,000 PSI
2 H4831 24" 3141 FPS 15" 2754 FPS 60,000 PSI + range
3 RL-22 24" 3233 FPS 15" 2804 FPS 60,000 PSI + range

All based with the 125gr Partition.

None of these powders burned 100% in the 15" barrel but with 96% or above ( which is what the results were)
you probably will not see any powder inside the barrel.

JMHO FWIW I have tried the 125 gr partition and it is not a good bullet. Even the tech that I spoke with at Nosler did not speak highly of it. When asked why does Nosler continue to manufacturer the bullet? Because people want that particular weight grain. ????? shaking my head..... My 260 hates that thing...

I am hoping to get 2800fps from a 129-140 grain bullet.

CT: I BOUGHT SOME NOSLER AMMO FOR THE 260 USING THE 125 PARTITION FOR USE IN A MODEL 7 "LOANER" RIFLE. HAVEN'T SHOT IT MUCH (MY RIFLE DAYS AT THE RANGE ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN) BUT I WAS NOT HAPPY WITH MY INITIAL RESULTS. MAYBE I SHUD JUST FORGET ABOUT THE 125gr NP IN 6.5's. I HAD THOUGHT ABOUT LOADING SOME UP FOR MY 6.5 JDJ.

Hendog : I have not tried this bullet. But from others response all of it was positive. It should work good in the 6.5 PRC
And as far as it being a SST VS AMAX or something other,, I would go with it because the 120gr SST is an excellent bullet for the 6.8 SPC.
Hogs hate that thing !!!! The 129SST should work great on Deer.

45MAN It took me a long time tinkering with different powders and recipes. But I got three shots of the 140gr Partition to go into one hole at 100yds. The model 7 will not permit more than three rounds to do that though. Barrel warms up a might and then the next ones, want to climb. Even though it has the 18" barrel, that is OK with me. Makes a great "truck gun".

I can get the 120 gr BTs to almost, do the same. I can cover three rounds with a dime. Again at 100 yds. And again she starts warming up.

Model 7 uses a 1-9 twist. JMHO That was a mistake.

DO not cast it aside if you want to try it in the 6.5 JDJ Original (SSK) barrels were in 1-8 twist. I really like the 6.5 JDJ cartridge, and depending upon who you talk to, and whose gun the 125gr is used out of, Some like it, and some don't. It works for some people but it did not for me with my mod 7 in 260.
45MAN I will look for the 125s and give them to you if you want them. I am quite sure I have a partial box. 4320 is the powder for the 125gr. in the 6.5JDJ

You will likely see about 88%-90% of the rifle velocity in a handgun length barrel.

I'd hazard a guess of around 25-30 fps loss per inch of barrel. That would likely put you in the 2700-2750 fps range in handgun length barrels, depending on exact velocity loss and actual barrel length.

I'm considering doing an XP-100 in the 6.5 PRC, with something along the lines of 17.5" barrel length.

CT: I HAVE PLENTY OF PARTITIONS BUT THANKS FOR THE OFFER. MAYBE THAT IS THE ANSWER WITH THE 260 MODEL 7, ONLY SHOOT 3 ROUNDS PER RANGE SESSION.

With SAUM, WSM, Dakota, Rem or Win Mag cases I typically subtract around 300 fps from rifle length in the same chamberings.
You will get better performance with the heavy for caliber bullets than you will with the lighter weight ones when comparing MV's with both lengths.
