After reading Gary's post about the doe harvest with an iron sighted revolver.....I'm just wondering how many use/have used iron sighted revolvers for hunting big game???
Tell us what you use and the type of game hunted.
I use a Dan Wesson 44 mag and have taken deer, one hog and an exotic ram with it.........

I have killed several hogs with iron sights and one deer. I prefer the optics though

Not a revolver: Hunted deer with a custom Colt 10mm with Winchester (Black Talons) set up for a 50 yard max shot and realistically under 40 yards.

I tired iron sights on my Ruger SRH several years ago when I first got the gun. I missed a doe up close, I shot over its back. I've returned to hunting with that revolver and use a 2X scope. Hunting with open sights is neat, but a low power scope works best for me.

My first handgun killed deer was with my 8-3/8 model 29 with factory sights. I've since gone to SDM fiber optic front sights and Millet rear sights on my iron sighted guns.
I still like using the iron sighted guns. I sight them dead on at 50yds. On close shots I prefer the fiber optic front sight over a scoped gun.

Shot my first big-game animal with an iron-sighted revolver last year. Whitetail doe @ 75 yards. Was a FA .454 6". Barnes 250-gr. XPB.

I've also not taken a deer with an iron sighted revolver...but I did with a 10" Contender in .44 Magnum. Shot was about 25 yards using a 320gr BBT cast bullet.

First and only deer with iron sights (and handgun) was a doe with a 6" S&W Model 28 "Highway Patrolman" in .357. Was scouting a new area and had 3 deer almost run me over. They were running and I took a snap shot at the biggest one at about 30 yards. Right through the neck. I was as shocked as the deer probably was when she saw me. My two friends thought I should enter a quick draw contest.
Anyway, since then .... I have decided to be more serious about it. I don't think the .357 is the ultimate cartridge in the revolver. I just picked up a 10" .44 barrel for my Contender. I think that will be just the ticket out of my tree stand at close ranges.

Though I mostly rely upon scopes pistols and carbines for such, I also use several Desert Eagle and Glock pistols with iron sights, and also several TC Contender barrels with open sights, for varmint and Deer hunting. Best open sighted shot this summer for me was a 125 yard Woodchuck with a Bellm 17hmr using Silhouette sights, and I have taken deer out to 80 yards with an open sighted Glock. I find it to be great fun and a great challenge to occasionally use an open sighted pistol for deer and varmints

I was coyote hunting last year out of my tree stand and had one right under me shot him in the head with a 22 revolver. Only so called "big game" everything else has been squirrels. One day i was sitting in tree stand coyote hunting and a crazy chicken came by and blasted him i haven't got a clue where he came from he was good eating though.
In God I trust!!!!

I love iron sighted pistols unfortunately these old eyes can't see them like I used to. Have gone to optic on most but not all of my sidearms. Something about roaming the woods with a nice 4 - 6" revolver riding on your hip can't be beat.
One 250# feral hog with 357mag 8" Dan Wesson with irons at 35yds
3 doe with 44mag 7 1/2' Ruger Redhawk with irons. Longest shot 75 yards

I have one 8pt here in Pa with my 6 1/2" S&W M29 and 260 hardcast SWC, and a big doe with my 8 3/8" S&W 686 and Sierra 170 JHC. Both were long ago-For me now, optics are the only way to go . I use only 2x-4x on my ''big game' calibers and like the 2-6x or 7x available variables on my others. I do have a Burris posi-loc on my XP-22 250.!

The roots of handgun hunting is based on iron sighted revolver hunting. I bagged my 1st whitetail buck in 1980 with an iron sighted Ruger SBH 44mag. In 25 years of handgunning I have killed numerous whitetails, a wild boar and a mouflon with various iron sighted 44 mags. Sight in at point of aim at 50 yards and you are good to go out to 100+yds if you can hold it. I use 23.0gr H-110 powder over a Hornady 240gr XTP. I prefer the iron sights if the distance is less than 50 yards. My current favorite is a 71/2" stainless Redhawk 44mag. It is as durable as a tank! For longer shots I love my scoped SSK Contender in 358JDJ. or my scoped 629.
