Going to shoot prairie dogs soon.. This time a handgun will be going too. l have been blasting prairie rats since the early 90s. Always with a rifle tho.. l have decided my little TC Contender in 22Hornet will be going along too... Definitely NOT along range rig l think lt will give me some fun inside 100yds with its fixed 4x Tasco scope. l know there are better scopes out there.. This is what l have and what I will be taking... My bullet of choice is a 40gr VMAX. lt will be quite interesting to see the difference between 2500fps in my Contender and 43oofps in a 220Swift... The Hornet barrel is new to me on my Contender.. So far its been both fun and surprisingly accurate.. Will try and keep yall posted.. Thanks

I know you you will enjoy it! Don't be afraid to air out that Hornet. Let the gun show you how far it will shoot.
And there is no fun in bringing home ammo- burn it!

Have fun! I find a walking hunt with a scoped 17 hmr contender to be the most fun for me. It's quite enough that if you find a nice hollow full of dogs you can sit and shoot for a long time before they wise up. Let us know how it works out when you get back.

Sounds fun. I think you will be able to stretch that distance some. Even if you miss at longer ranges, its fun and good practice.
I'm going in June, and besides myeasily reaches to rifles i will use my Smith Victory with a red dot, and my 12" Encore in 223. It has a Bushnell 2-6 on it, and is very accurate out to 200 yards.

I went last year. Wind was brutal in SD. .223 Contender and .22-250 were totally useless in the 20-30 mph winds. What worked for me was a Encore 6mmAI with 70 gr. BTs and 6.5/.284 Encore with 143 gr. ELD-xs (over kill, but I made longest shot of trip and the ELDxs were moved less than 25% than the others by the wind. All guns had 3-12BPlexes. Good luck.

That is the absolute truth. "When there is lead in the air, there is always a prayer!"

I have PD set-ups for close, medium, and far. An A-Max or ELD-Match bullet will have a high BC/good in wind, and still be destructive at distance. It all depends on how you like to play.
