I?m wanting to use my SBHH for coyotes this winter. I know about any bullet will work, but I?m thinking of using a 180 gr JHP of some type, loaded over a healthy charge of H110. Hoping to get more of a ?varmit bullet? affect. What would be a good bullet for this type of hunting? Also, how Do you think this load would perform on antelope?
Thx

If you want big damage and super shock effect, then 180 gr. Sierra JHCs will do the job. Used it many times. Same effect each time.

Are coyote pelts worth anything in your locale? If so, you may consider a solid for minimal damage. Not sure if it's worth the trouble for you, but their winter pelts should be thick.

John

But for the grace of God, there, I go.

I used to make $30 to $60 per pelt; haven't followed the market lately though.

Of course the other trick is to find a buyer that will treat you fair. The best and easiest way to get a few bucks and pelt damage wouldn't matter would be if bounties are paid by the county or DNR.

Thank you....I thought an 180 gr bullet was what I was looking for. And no, I?m not worried about the pelts. Will the same bullet work on chest shots on Antelope? Will it hold together long enough to break a shoulder if need be?

The Sierra 180 works on deer. I took several through both shoulder. Big damage, minimal movement. Antelope won't be a problem.

Whatever grain bullet your handgun likes best is what I would use. Unless your pelt hunting, why not stick with your current hunting load and make it a practice session on the yotes? For the caliber your shooting (assume 44 mag) and 180gr. bullets traveling say at 1700/1800fps and as thin skinned and lite bone structure a yote is, I don't think you're going to see much damage or explosive results like shooting a varmint type .224" caliber at 3500fps. I believe it will most likely be .429" in and out, so just stick with you current hunting load. Just my $.02

Offshore, I've had different results with 180 gr. .44 bullets. The large cavity in the Sierra 180 creates a lot of fluid displacement in animals (they're mostly water like humans are). This results in some significant internal destruction. SOMETIMES the exits are a little small, but open the animal up and it gets really ugly inside.
I've had this result with Rem. 240 gr. HPs also.
The only HP that showed less damage than the above were Horn. XTPs. They're tougher and expand less.

My first two antelope does I took with my Ruger SB were taken with 180 gr bullets. The first one went maybe 75 yds and the second one had both shoulders broke so she didn't go any where
