I have been doing some research on the 327 Federal cartridge and what I`ve read is impressive... Anyway... I found an article in the latest Gun Digest- The magazine- by Richard Mann that starts with the question "The best general purpose revolver cartridge of all time?"... however, the main reason for my interest is that Mr. Mann takes a large body buck using his 5 1/2" Ruger single action shooting Buffalo Bore`s 120gr hard cast ammo. The shot was 30 or so yards while his daughter used custom Marlin 1894 lever action and Federal`s 100gr JSP to quickly take a whitetail doe.. This is what I`ve been waiting to hear and the 327 performed as expected.. Mann also list`s his chronographed results of 20 different 32 caliber loads including the 32 S&W- ACP- H&Rmag- and 327 Fed. that he shot through 3"- 4.6"-5.5"- and 16" barrels. I knew the Federal 100gr JSP load was fast and he gets 1725fps MV from his 5 1/2" Ruger... Impressive...This is a great article for anyone interested in the 327 Federal....Below is a photo of the GP-100 in 327 Federal that I ordered

You are gonna find out that 100 grain Federal is HOT! I describe the .327 as 32 Maximum rather than a Magnum. Can I look forward a field report on flesh from JFJ?

That's a nice piece, James! I've been slightly interested in the 327 as well. Seems to be a neat cartridge. I'd love to have one like DH has in the M97, it's SWEET!

That's a nice looking gun ... had that same model in 44 Special on my list not long ago. I think I'll read up on the .327 as you suggest ... knowledge can be dangerous!!

Can you please post a link to this article? I have been looking at getting one of these in a Henry for my wife (very petite and recoil sensitive).

Thanks,
Mitch

Always thought the .327 was 'under rated' by the general shooting public, similar to what happened to the .41 magnum.

It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

l have witnessed Matthew ''K I L L'' quite a few chickens, pigs, turkeys, even rams out to 100yds and beyond!! l must say that little Federal rd gives those animals a real WHACK.. Eardrums too!! @ almost 60,000psi the 327Fed is a true MAGNUM...

If you were to chart my caliber perferences (in power) since the beginning it would start with 357 with a rise through the 44 mag and beyond and then drop a little when I finally bought a 41 mag only to rise again with the 500WE and now drop to the 32`s... Much of North Americas game can be cleanly taken with a 41 and the correct bullet... The 327 Federal is much the same to me except for the size of the animals with which to use it on... Now with Rich Mann taking a large body whitetail using his 5 1/2 Ruger loaded with a 130gr cast at 1425 MV from his SA makes me take a diffrent view of the cartridge.. I don`t know how far he had to track the deer or details of the hunt but its still impressive.... Time will telll...

JAMES: I AM GOING TO TRY TO CULL A LARGE FEMALE AOUDAD WITH MY SINGLE 7 USING THE FEDERAL EAGLE 100 gr LOAD. AOUDAD ARE HEAVY IN THE SHOULDER AND I AM GOING TO HOPEFULLY GET A BROADSIDE SHOULDER SHOT AT ONE.

LIKE YOU, THE OLDER I GET THE MORE MY INTEREST IN SMALLER CALIBERS.

I'll certainly be eager to read how well the cartridge works for you two.

I really like my Single Seven in .327. It is the most accurate revolver I own.
Everyone that shoots the little hot rod is impressed. I think one of the reasons it is so much fun is that it is a true 50K+ PSI, 1600 fps magnum that doesn't hurt your hands or wallet.
And speaking of 1600 fps, the .327 shoots flat. I bought mine to compete in my local IHMSA field pistol matches where a single shot.22 Hornet is the weapon of choice. The targets are set at 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards. A flat trajectory is an asset. I shoot the 25 and 50 yard targets with the same sight setting and then add one click for the 75 and 100 yard targets. Yes, one click of elevation change across the course of fire.
I am a .327 Federal fan, but...
I am not ready to call it a deer cartridge. I look forward to more field reports and wish I had critters available for me to test it on.
