I've decided to focus on using a new HP for deer hunting this fall. Recently I've taken 3 different animals with 3 different guns but all 3 were 5 1/2" barreled guns so I've decided to use one of my favorite 4 5/8's old models with this new bullet & see how things work out. The bullet I'm going to use is a 45 caliber 217 gr Maxine Mouth HP breaking out of the chutes of my 3 screw shorty 45. Today was the initial work up day & I started by using 10 grains of Longshot.
Shooting from the sitting position with my back against my truck & knees drawn up (my usual position) I shot the first 3 rounds & checked with the glasses. The group was vertical but all 3 were almost touching. I decided not to make a sight adjustment & loaded & fired the next 3 of the same load. These 3 did the same thing, just made the group string vertical with all 6 shots almost touching but a tick low of my aiming point.
Next up was 11 grs of Longshot & I did make a sight adjustment before shooting the first 3 shots. These were much more centered with one shot going slightly out. I loaded the next 3 & fired using the same hold & was pretty pleased with this load. Didn't use the Chronograph, that will come later. First photo is the 217 gr. Maxine Mouths that are a clone of the Lyman #452190 except for the HP. Second photo is my OM shorty & the 6 shot group at 20 yds sitting.
I'll run a few more groups & see what kind of speed I'm getting, perhaps somewhere around 1000 fps is my guess with this short barrel.

Nice looking bullet. Did you have to use a special seating stem to prevent bullet deformation?

Sawfish, no but I did have to turn my Dillon seater over or it would have deformed this bullet

I agree ... those are handsome bullets. What type/brand of die do you crimp with?

PsTan, I load all my pistol calibers on my Dillon 550 so I'm seating with one die & crimping with the 4th die. If anyone is loading on a single stage press it helps to buy a profile crimp die so you seat & crimp separately.

That is a good looking bullet. Getting them seated without messing them up took some effort I am sure.
We are down to 65 days until the Missouri deer season starts. I need to get started working with loads development myself.

Those look pretty neat. I'm interested to read how well they perform on game.

Well I went back hunting yesterday but there were a bunch of people working right in the crick (creek) to you southern guys & all the deer had moved out of the area.
I did see some but they were wild & running & this country is really open, no trees, just some cover in little draws & some edge cover, makes it tough to get close.
You'll see how open in the photo's plus you'll see one of the places where the antelope run & slide right under the fence, they won't jump a fence, it's pretty rare.
I spotted a group of 7 doe antelope & crawled about 200 yds but they were moving away faster than I could crawl. Thanks goodness for my knee pads, you have to have them if you hunt antelope.
I did bust one big old jackrabbit as he was shaded up under some sagebrush, popped him at 22 yds with the 217 gr HP, it punched his ticket pretty good!

I'd say it was punched pretty good! 357 Maggie?

No, that was a Ruger OM 45 with a 217 gr Maxine Mouth HP running 965 fps. Ran it through the clock today.

Nice looking bullets, but unless I'm mistaken, the 452190 (or 454190) has a rounded flat point profile, no? A 452490 with the gas check portion cut off looks pretty close! Or maybe the 452424.

At any rate, i like the concept for deer and such. Seems to have worked for you in the recent field report!

The number on my Miha mould is 453490 so I'm not sure what it is, kind of numbered after the old 452190 but looks more like a smaller version of the Keith 452424 to me.
Which ever it is I'm really happy with it. Bought it used on another site a while back & it came with 3 sets of pins.

Looks like it may be what's currently listed as MP 454 - 423 HP PB. 95 Euros with an additional 95 Euro tax for the two cavity mould, if i read the catalog listing correctly!

This thread has me wanting to try these ...

I'd love to get 1000fps out of them in my Smith 69.

PsTan,

Gt makes good bullets. I shot a bunch out of my 41 Maggie. Very accurate.

I'm picking up a model 69 in the next few weeks, I plan on trying some 240 HP'S.
