I recently got a BFR 500 JRH in trying to load for it I'am having some issues.I'm using cut down 500 S&W cases RCBS dies the expander is putting a buckle in the case.I've read of others having the same issue how did you solve it shortening or turning the expander down?By changing dies? I load handgun on a Lee turret press does the Lee powder thru die do it?I'd like to crimp separate from seating.Ive read the Lee 500 S&W won't crimp JRH but will it seat the bullet then use my RCBS for crimping To get the other dies to use 4 stations should I buy 500 S&W die or would the powder thru and crimp die for the 50AE work Thanks

Billc,

I had the same problem with the 500 Spl. and the 500 JRH using the RCBS expander die. Notice that the RCBS 500 S&W expander plug is stepped (a noticeable shoulder or ridge). Contacted RCBS and they sent an 50 AE expander, promptly and no charge. The 50 AE expander plug is not stepped, tapers smoothly. Sorry no pictures; however, it solved my and your problem.

Hope this helps,

Doc

For the crimp die I contacted Lee about a custom factory crimp die via their web site. They are able to make this die for the 500 JRH. I provided them a few dummy rounds per their request, think they turned around the order ~3 weeks + returned the dummy rounds. I have used it on a few rounds and works as advertised.

Probably late to the party but just in case anyone new comes along and needs some help with their 500JRH loading, I use the RCBS 500 S&W Mag/Spec carbide die set(RCBS #: 23812). Did not have to cut down the seat/crimp die since the die can be used with the 500 S&W Special. I purchased an additional Seat/Crimp die (RCBS #: 23838) and use it on my Dillon 550b to separate the seating from the crimping. This setup work very well for my needs.

Ok... I am brand new to hand loading. I have not purchased any equipment yet but I am picking up a BFR 500 JRH this Saturday. First step into single action revolvers! So I would like to start loading so I can feed my addiction
