i was just thinking about the .30-30 in a pistol bbl. i realize that you can load spitzers in it since it is a single shot. but i was wondering what bullets can be counted on to expand at the lower velocities...ballstic tip, hornady sst? or maybe just the plain old cup and core types like the core-lokt style? what grain bullets seem to work best.. 150? or maybe something lighter? what kind of range is possible using pointed bullets...150, 200??? not sure about getting a .30-30 bbl just yet. just lots of questions . thanks!

I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a handgun today.

Load it with 125gr NBT's or the Hornady 130gr SP (or SSPB if you can find them). I've used the standard 130gr SP at 2000fps and 2400fps with great success...the standard 30-30 should get them to 2300fps and they will do great. In capable hands and a good load...200yds is possible.

bisleyfan44, I will second what Dan said. The Nosler125gr are very capable bullets in the 30-30. Mine (10"bbl) with the old Sierra Single shot Bullet 125gr(I think that was the weight) would roll bowling pins at 200yds easily from the rest.

I was just looking at some factory loaded 30-30 Balistic tips last night at the local sporting goods store. I can't remeber but I think they were 120g. red tip but not 100% sure.

I have had very good results with my 14 inch barrel contender and the Nosler Ballistic Tips in both 125 and 150 grain. Very accurate and deadly on prarie dogs.
