I?m down to my last couple of canisters, and was wondering what everyone is using since Hodgdons discontinued H-4227? Primary use is big bore revolvers.

Thanks!

H110/W296 is my goto big bore magnum powder.
Vituhvori N110 is also an alternative, albeit an expensive one.

Someone should correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe H4227 was dropped, because IMR4227 is the same powder in different packaging. In the past there may have been a slight difference, but since Hodgdon took over the IMR line years ago, I believe it's the same stuff.

That's what I understand as well. I believe load data is interchangeable as well.

IMR4227 was a product made by Dupont. H4227 was Australian powder AR2205 re-packaged by Hodgdon for the US market as H4227. It had different chemistry but near identical burn performance. Some years ago Hodgdon acquired IMR Powders. For marketing reasons they rebranded H4227 (AR2205) as IMR4227.

If you buy a current canister you should see that it's labelled as made in Australia.

Providing you use current load data you should be good to go.

DH, I am down to my last pound and a half of H-4227 that I used with great success with my 454 "whitetail load" and 27.4grs of powder pushing a double groove 300gr XTP around 1400fps. Its a accurate handload from my FA`s 454 that I used for almost any angle shot on deer out to 100yds. The extra weight guaranteed good penetration taking close to 13 deer... IMR-4227 has given me good accuracy with 21.5grs under a 250gr partition from two different 44 mag`s. My go to gun is a 41 mag that is so darn accurate and easy to shoot with a super handload using #9... Good luck
