Hunted hard for 3 days in KS in the Antlerless, any weapon season in unit 5. Took my longbow but the deer were spooky and not giving me a shot. Was hunting from a pop up blind in some timber and cedars. This doe came out with three others and took the wrong trail.
Had the Contender in 6.5JDJ setting on a chair next to me on 3x. Grabbed the Contender and when she came between two cedars that I knew was 40 yards, I sort of gave here a bleet with my mouth and when she stopped, I dropped the hammer.
120grn Nosler Ballistic Tip, new formed brass, H414 powder. Put it right behind the leg,6" above the belly and she went maybe 30 yds. Got lungs and took out part of the aorta.
She was 110 lbs and the guy that lives up there and helps me process the deer, said she was about 4 years old.
More meat in the freezer.
Mike

Gotta love that 6.5 JDJ. Not even an inkling of a challenge for that cartridge at 40 yards. Good shot...

Thanks for the comments. You are right about that, Gregg. I have taken deer out to 200 yards with it using 120grn Pro Hunters and two different wild hogs in South TX with it using ballistic tips. Also, it took 3 large porcupines on that trip. The owner of the ranch told me to shoot everyone I saw because they are eating his pi?on pines. The first morning on the stand waiting for pigs I shot two sticker pigs he calls them. He thought I had gone crazy and was just shooting at rocks or something. He was happy.
Right after I shot the porcupines, the hogs show up for corn. Took out two of them.
It was a great trip.
Mike

Way to go. Nothing like the ol' 6.5 JDJ. A true masterpiece in handguns.

GLAD TO SEE THE 6.5 JDJ GETTING SOME WORK, ONE OF THE ABSOLUTE BEST CONTENDER CARTRIDGES EVER. AND YES, THOSE PORCUPINES ARE HARD ON THE PINON PINES.

Very Nice, Congrats.

I was just up in Colby, KS last weekend and tried to get in a quick day for doe or coyote, but it just didn't happen this trip. Next time.

Nice work with your Contender. Nice deer and a good shot.

I have had a 6.5X30JDJ 14" Contender barrel for over 20 years and really like it.

Congratulations Hawkeye, I carried my revolver this late season but nothing close enough for me comfortably take a shot, so i had a weak moment and took one with my rifle since they were moving away. maybe next year.
