Took the new Super Blackhawk Hunter out for a few minutes today. Heres what i learned. First, i love shooting it. FAR more gentle on my dainty hand than my 8&3/8" magnaported mod 29 with same loads. I may be a single action guy :-). Second, the trigger sucks. I did the standard poorboy trigger job before i ever shot it so the break was reasonably light, but the creep is crazy!

Pt 2. Only lets me post so much before i run out of space. Creep feels like a half inch! After i got home put other leg of trigger spring back on so there would be a better feel with the creep. Third i like the Burris 2x so far. Forth I NEED PRACTICE!!!! Its been too long since ive shot heavy handguns. Also my old reloads i had on hand stink.

Pt 3. The crimp was really poor and the bullets (300 or 320gr) were walking out and binding the cylinder so i loaded them singly. Most of my big groups were vertical stringing so the lack of crimping and varying pressures may have made my shooting worse. Also front scope ring loosened a half turn although i doubt that had any effect.

Pt 4 I love the gun with the exception of the trigger! Really looking forward to packing it and killing something with it!!!
Anyone have any suggestions dealing with trigger travel?

I've always sent my Ruger's straight to Jack and had them worked over. Never liked the stock trigger myself either. I like the Super Blackhawks other than that. Those SA revolvers are addicting! Ya can't have just one!!!

Poor Boy Trigger Job "Marrying the Trigger" has worked good for me on several single action revolvers. This is basically equivalent of firing live or dry numerous times. Of course the other option is a gunsmith...

I'm not a fan of the stock Ruger trigger either. Everyone I have has been worked on. Bisley 45 - John Linebaugh Super Blackhawk 44 mag and Super Single Six - Larry Kelly @ Mag-na-port

Vance-l told you recoil would be less w/SBHH than a Smith with any load...
l am still learning my Ruger. l feel the trigger will smooth out
over time. Consistent crimp is needed for good accuracy..
Enjoy,

Thanks guys. Greg, I had done that procedure as soon as I got the gun. The issue is more the long creepy pull. I spent some more time going through the "marriage process"last night & put the second leg of the spring back on. It actually feels better having the second leg on with the creep. Gives it some feel which it lacked with one leg off. It may get worked over & ported at some point, but I hope to be packing it till bears go to bed in the fall so that's at least 6 months from now.
282, you were right! I normally apply a stout crimp & have never had an issue. As I looked at the unfired ammo I saw some had good crimps & some not so much. I assume I got ahold of some cases that had been trimmed beyond what I normally trimmed to. Before I start loading 44mag again it will all be a uniform length & I will be using the Lee factory crimp die.

Vance, a gun is no better than the trigger! I see guys talking about the "poor mans trigger job" don' fall for that, those 2 legs are on there for a reason. You will make it lighter dropping one leg off but that won't fix a bad trigger & a bad trigger is terrible if you're trying to shoot offhand. There has to be several good gunsmiths up there that can help you with with a quality trigger job, I'm lucky, I raised one. He does all my trigger work & they are amazing & once you have one you have to have all of them done. Think about it, you've got a great gun, a great scope, a great load & a %$itty trigger, what's important when there's a bear standing out there at 60 yds partially hidden?

Vance , sixshot hit the nail on the head ( and he CAN shoot )! Once you get a gun with a really good trigger pull it will spoil you and you will wonder why you waited so long to invest in a quality trigger job. Early in my handgunning exploits I went groundhog hunting with a Contender with a 10" barrel in .22mag. I went to the same farm and shot at the same groundhog every week for a month. Same story each time , 50 yard iron sight shot , bang , miss and groundhog would run down into his hole. After several weeks when I shot he would not even run into the hole anymore! Hmmmm ? Frame off to SSK for a trigger job and back to the farm several weeks later. Same set-up as before but this time after bang I heard WHOP! Every gun after that I got a trigger job and have not looked back.
