Weather knocked me out today, but getting a number of XP's and a G-2 ready for pd season.
Some cartridges that will be used this year: 221 Fireball AI, 22-250, 223, 22 Creed, 20 BR, 204 Ruger, 20 Vartarg, 17 Mach IV, 6x45, 6x47, 6 BR, 6XC, and 6 Creed.
Getting excited.

Anyone else doing any doggin or rock-chuck shooting this year?
If, so what do you plan to use?

Sounds like fun Ernie. Would love to experience that one day. No prairie dogs in south Texas. But the raccoons and jackrabbits keep us busy during the off season.

Leaving Friday to head west for a week of Rock Chuck shooting. I'll be using my stock .223 XP-100 with an old Burris 7X on it shooting Black Hills 50 grain V-Max factory rounds. My other gun is a T/C Encore in 6 Creed. with a 15.5" MGM 1 in 8 twist heavy factory contour barrel and it wears a Burris 3X-12X B.P. scope. The load will be Hornady 108 grain ELD Match ammo. I used this same combination last year with excellent results.

Heading out for some P-dogs this weekend. Will be taking my one and only XP -- the .284 Winchester. I love seeing P-dogs blow up in chunks!

Been thinking about a 20 Vartarg since shooting the one Derek had there in Wyoming last year. Had never heard of that round till then. I sure liked it!

The fast twist 223, the 22-250, 221 Fireball AI, 204 Ruger (Contender barrel), 20 Vartarg (not shot yet-Load development today), 17 Mach IV, 6x45, 6x47, and 6 BR were all picked up used. Other than the 17 Mach IV and the 20 Vartarg (not shot yet), all of these shoot great, with some shooting phenomenal.

I'm going to try to squeeze in a trip in early June if work will allow it. I'll bring 17hmr and 223 in short barrel contender, 223 rifle and 26-06 long barreled encore

Ernie-- how about a Ruger Charger? Work very well for prairie dogs past 100 yards?

Been thinking about getting one of the older ones. All wood stock instead of the new plastic ones.

Well I am assuming that the Pdogs had a little comeback. Last year the disease had gotten to a lot of them from what I was hearing. I do wish that I was going to be heading that way,,, but plans are for something different this year.
Good luck to all of you that are going out this year. Preparation is half the fun. (loading and sighting in )
Great time to push the limits on yourself and equipment's range.

Killed pd's out to about 350 yards with mine...They work fine.
22lr will teach a lot about wind

Wonder if they ever made the Charger in 22mag.

Paul, I seem to remember you hitting a few dogs in the 300-350 yard range while using the little Vartarg. I also remember a big grin on your face!!

It seems like I saw one once in the 22mag configuration. But can't be 100% on that. You would not gain anything trying to use a 22mag for longer shots. The 22 would get it done and if you learn to read the wind at 300+ yds then you really have set yourself apart.

Steve Garbe used to shoot his 22 at 300yds with Iron Sights.
For awhile he even taught people how to do it and how to read the wind. You doing this with a Pistol is way beyond the average IMHO. Way to go !

You got that right Ernie! Every time I take the Vartarg out it gets passed around. Mostly I loose it to Lisa for the day. So I'm gathering parts to build another one for her. Super economical to load. A blast to shoot. With the break on the front you can see impact past 75 yards. And with little to no wind, it is deadly on vermin out to 400 plus. At Wyshot last year Lisa and I both recorded hits past that with it.
Paul. You need to build one. You won't regret it!
This is a pick of my VT and a dog shot just over 250 yards by Lisa.
Paul had several past that using that little gun. Followed by lots and lots of laughter!

I laughed more that week than I had in a long time. I made shots every day that I didn't think were possible with a pistol. Made a believer out of me for sure.

You gave yourself the opportunity to do things outside your box, and look at the results.
It opened up a whole new world for you in just a couple of days-Proud for you!

Thanks! It's been a lot of fun. I have more XP's in my future for sure!! A 7 Dakota, a 20 Vartarg, and a 243 at a minimum.
