I need to replace the rear sight blade on my 5" 629 Classic with a lower sight blade. I was under the impression that when you remove the old blade you have to snap / break the retainer on the adjusting screw to get it to come off. You then need to obtain a new replacement screw when mounting the new blade. A call to S&W today resulted in a young lady telling me you only have to back the adjusting screw all the way out and she never heard of any other parts being needed. I would appreciate any input from someone who has changed this blade before. Thanks for any info provided!

Years ago I had my LGS replace a sight blade and we had a discussion about the breaking sight screw. As I remember, there was a possibility that the screw might break and need to be replaced. I have replaced a few rear sight blades, but do not recall breaking a screw. These were all older Smiths. It is quite possible that the breaking screw possibility has been eliminated on the Classic models. Suggest you call Brownells Customer Service. They will have the answer and any parts you may need.

I recommend changing it out to a Bowen Classic Arms all steel rear sight. I got the Target version blade for my two X-frames. They also have a Rough Country version that has opposing screws instead of click by click settings. It allows a precise locking in exactly where you want it. Check them out and you will never have a better rear sight set-up. They have models for Smith and Wesson revolvers and for Ruger revolvers.

I'm not sure the Bowen will be lower, and he may need it sooner than in a couple years.

Every S&W sight blade I have replaced needed the adjustment screw "sheared" off first. Every one I have purchased came with the replacement. They have all come from Midway.

Pick your poison as back-orders from Midway can take time. But Bowen Classic Arms has them in stock and he can get a lower rear sight or get a replacement front-sight that is higher. Either way, he will get it sighted in just fine.

Mike, You need a "staking" tool to finish the job. I`ve changed all the sight blades on my S&W`s to white outline for my eyes. Sent you a PM...
PS- your right about snapping the screw

Mike-lf your 629 Classic has removable FRONT sight blades they

can be easily switched or replaced as you see fit.. The height

is written on them... ex--.227''--.250''--.199''

They are available from S&w or Brownell. We silhouette shooters

can change the front sight out between banks of targets quicker

than trying to count clicks.. Push on your front sight with your

finger... lf it moves forward with tension you can switch them

in app 15 seconds... They aren't cheap. App $20 apiece... Last

til you lose one:-( Little springs and holder can get gone too.
