I'm considering sending my BFR 460 off to SSK to have a brake installed. Anyone have experience with either or both the fish gill style and/or arrestor? Thoughts on which would be best for a revolver? Thanks.

I have had a Mag- na -ported 12-1/2" .375 JDJ Contender since 1989. In 2002 I bought an Encore and a 15" SSK barrel with an Arrestor. Despite an increase of about 200 fps over the shorter barrel, the decrease in felt recoil was amazing. I have no experience with JD's fish gill.

I have the arrestor installed on a 270 win encore barrel. With 130 gr bullets at 2850fps it?s a pussycat to shoot. I have no experience with the fish grill. Maybe Doc Rogers will chime in on this, I believe he has both.

I have an Arrestor on my SSK 45/70 Contender and a Fish Gill on my 16.5" .35 Whelen Improved Encore. Both designs are excellent, but as you go up in power, I think the Fish Gill has a distinct advantage.

I have a 500 S&W Encore barrel from SSK with an arrestor brake...that barrel kicks like a hot 44 from a revolver....my buddy Cole Cash has the SSK Super Arrestor (fish gill) on his 450 Alaskan Encore barrel..both are excellent...the Fish Gill brake to me is for Big Bore Rifle Rounds in pistol barrels....and ultimately how much recoil needs to be cut....the fish gill disperses more gas and cuts more recoil, it's also much bigger and more expensive....both are very effective in their own right

I've been shooting an Encore 375 JDJ for years with the Arrestor brake - very effective.

Having both and each work well? On a BFR revolver I?d lean towards the arrestor.

I have SSK barrels with 4 port M-N-P, Arrestor, and a 416 Taylor with their fish gill. Although you didn't mention the Mag-na-port option, I thought I would comment on it. The M-N-P is not quite as effective in reducing muzzle flip as the Arrestor. This equates to an Arrestor equipped barrel to stay down with all the remaining energy being directed straight back at your hand. Of the two, I find the M-N-P more comfortable/tolerable to shoot, especially off the bench. In comparing an Arrestor equipped barrel to the fish gill, I have a SSK Encore 500 S&W barrel with an Arrestor, and I have an SSK Encore barrel in 416 Taylor with the fish gill. I'm shooting 350 grain bullets in each, using about 40 grains of powder in the 500, and 68 grains in the 416. The fish gill is much more comfortable to shoot. The multiple baffles/vertical surfaces of the fish gill help negate the rearward thrust. It does have a little more muzzle rise than the Arrestor, but it dumps so much gas that it is not bad at all. If it were me, I would go fish gill. My 2 cents.

I have a SSK fish gill brake on a .416 Taylor Encore. Normally this is a semi brutal gun, but mine's a pussy cat. The barrel lifts off the rest at the range about 2-3". Recoil is much less than my non ported .475L. It's one of my more enjoyable guns to shoot.
I have arrestor brakes on all my other Encores and .375/.284 XP. Muzzle rise is 1-2" up to my .338 Mag JDJ and .375/.284.
