Yesterday was HOT but I wanted to do some more shooting at 65 yds so I set up my 8X8 steel swinger target made by Bill Fowler (Excellent) and got in my normal sitting position with my knees drawn up, Elmer Keith style, put my piece of leather between my knees so I didn't get an owee & laid out my OM 41, 44 & 45. The 41 & 45's are both shorty's but shoot just fine with powder coated cast slugs in the 1000-1100 fps range that I normally shoot. The 6 1/2" 44 flat top runs a bit faster & lays 5 of Elmer's finest in a palm sized group if I do my part.
Shooting from this position you give up a bit of the best possible accuracy the guns are capable of but you get a more realistic idea of your own ability in the field so this is how I always practice. I ran 10 rounds through each gun before the sun had me beat down, I was painting the steel after every 5 shots & felt like a french fry after the 30 shots. I had to use the black side today, the white was totally blurred out because of the bright sun & the background.
I missed with my very first shot, it went high, the next 29 shots rang steel, the guns are ready I just need to keep shooting & working my way out to 150 yds along the way, that 8X8 piece of steel looks like a poker chip at distance!

NO BETTER FEELING THAN A REVOLVER BEING "READY" WITH A GOOD LOAD FOR IT AND SIGHTED IN. I GOT 4 READY, STILL WORKING ON 3 OTHERS.

Very nice. I like using my 8" steel gong for all distances as well. It closely replicates the size of a deers vitals. Now if they would only paint them yellow like my gong during hunting season. 😀

Good shooting Dick!
Need to get the front sight narrowed on my 6 1/2 in .41 and .45. Just retired TODAY so may have time for that now.

I wish I could make myself put 2dogs front sights on the 44 & 45 but I just can't do it to those 2 old models, maybe some day.

Mike, as I move it out it won't take as much pounding! I like to have he white side facing me, makes it easier to see the hits with the binoc's. What I do is take 2 USPSA targets & turn the tan side towards me & place them behind the white 8X8, this gives me plenty of space around the steel so I can see where I'm missing & I can fine tune whatever gun I'm shooting.
That's where the 2dogs sight comes into play & that's why it's only painted part way down, the bottom of that orange paint is a second sight so I have to add or subtract paint to dial it where I want to be zeroed with the load I'm shooting, usually about 125 yds. Once you get the hang of it, it works really well.
I don't use it very often, I would much rather get under 75 yds but out in the west sometimes you run out of options. Still, most of my shots are 40-60 yds & most guys reading this can make that shot.
