458 LOTT Range Report

This project came into being a little fast than expected. It's part of the "what if bug".

SSK 15-inch Encore 1.010? diameter barrel with Fish Gill Brake \ Burris 3x12 \ 4 Warne Steel rings \ SSK 3 screw flat bottom forend \ 1-14? twist \ Weighs 7.70 pounds.

Brass: Hornady 458 LOTT
Primers: CCI-250
Bullets: Barnes 300 TSX, Barnes 350 TSX, Hornady 300 HP, Speer 350 FP

Powder:
H4198 ? To date only powder tested

Velocity: Recorded by Lab Radar
Hornady 300 HP (COL 3.380) 80.0 = 2544fs \ 82.0 = 2540fs \ 84.0 = 2641fs
Barnes 300 TSX (COL 3.600) 80.0 = 2545fs \ 80.5 = 2574fs \ 81.0 = 2592fs \ 83.0 = 2627fs \ 84.0 = 2669fs
Pet Load = 300 TSX (COL 3.575) 81.0 = 2600fs (Set +1.5 inch high at 100Y)
Barnes 350 TSX (COL 3.600) 77.0 = 2426fs \ 78.0 = 2447fs \ 79.0 = 2467fs
Speer 350 FP (COL 3.560) 77.0 = 2320fs

I have not had a chance to stretch it out to 200 yards yet, maybe this weekend.
When compared to the 458 Win Mag in a 14? barrel, the Lott runs about 250fs faster.
I have not tested any bullet weight heavier than 350 grains.

Conclusion:
Accuracy excellent.
The weight of the Encore and fish gill brake do a great job taming the recoil which is a little brisk but fun to shoot.

Good shooting
D.

You definitely have to something really big with that.
It's got my SSK .416 Taylor beat by a bunch. I've done elephants, Cape buff, lion, 900# roan with mine mostly with one shot.
I think all you'd have to do is wave that bad boy at game and it'd say...no mas!!!

I has good luck with AA1680 and RL7 in an extra long 45-70 with a similar setup. I never got the hornady 300gn to shoot better than 12 inch pattern. The barnes 300gn ttsx shot pretty well and improved the bc a bit. At those velocities i might worry about the ttsx coming apart, but that wouldnt much matter to whatever you hit.

Hey, Rey, I shot a lot of groundhogs and deer with my .416 getting ready for the big boys. It puts a big S in stopping power.
That .458L will look like the .416 on double steroids. Damage from those big boys is not for the weak of stomach.
Besides, it's just plain fun having that much power in a small package.

That is about all the BAD one could stand in a handgun I would think. I bet the muzzle blast is very impressive.

I HAD one of Wapitirod?s rechambered 45/70 barrels in the Lott. I was sore for days after a range trip.

Thanks everyone once again for the comments.

I ran 6 shots this afternoon at 200 yards which was my first at this distance. Using a 6 inch paper plate my normal post it note and red sticker. I started out on a clean barrel. First shot went high 2-3 near bug hole. It stated to come into its own with shots 4,5,6 for a 3 shot group of 1.322?. Shots 2 though 6 printed 1.954? group. With it set 1.5" high at 100Y, it is 4.5" low at 200Y. I believe it is ready for some real work now.

CMNASH, I don?t have anything larger in weight then the 350?s. I ran data from the Barnes website through Quick Load with the 15-inch barrel these are the results using H4895 with a COL of 3.600
450 TSX start load 71.0 = 1979fs \ max load 75.0 = 2093fs
500 TSX start load 66.0 = 1868fs \ max load 70.0 = 1980fs

Franchise, keep me posted on what might be on the hunt horizon, I?d certainly be up for it.

Doc, yes Sir... Lots of power in a small package = fun!

In General, I find the overall weight of the Encore and big brake make it possible to shoot accurately. For my heavy hitters I use / wear a pair of impact gloves to help soften the shot on my hand. This one is really really loud and make me laugh with every shot.

D.

That gun is really toeing the line between a firearm and artillery.

Also, that is an outstanding group at 200. Congrats

WOW!! That thing is AWESOME! I would love to see video of you shooting it.

Even with a near miss it would suck the oxygen away and still be lethal! LOL!

Great shooting!
