So I have several boxes of the Speer 210gr 44mag. Bullets. Was going to try and use them in my 44 special for hunting. Several issues, first I could not get the bullets to seat to the same overall length. Come to find out the nose of the bullets are not uniform in size,so caused them not to seat the same. Next is in Speers #14 reloading manual it's considered a magnum round, loaded all the way up to 1664 fps. In #15 manual it's considered a personal defense round loaded to around 800 to 900 fps. What gives? Got a call into speer ill see what they say. Any experience you guys have with the bullet would be appreciate. Thanks Norm

Well just heard back from Speer, Reloading book #15 is wrong data. Info accidentally got carried over from the 200 grain bullet and they are aware of it. And yes the length/profile of the bullet can be a little off. Weird because I have never had this problem seating Speers bullets before.

Never noticed the length issue using these bullets, but used them in a 44 Special @1250 fps on a deer at 30 yards. Double lung hit and the deer went about 25 yards and piled up. Tremendous blood trail and complete penetration.

This was with a Ruger Bisley FT with very good accuracy. The Speer bullets shoot great in a FA 97 as well.

Thanks Muddy, good to know they will work out of the 44 special. Especially after this years experience with the 200gr. XTP. Shot and chronograph the Speer loads today, good accuracy and I'm getting 1281fps. This is 18 grn. of 2400 out of 5 1/2" FA 97. Happy with it,but will have to match nose profile with the bullets,to get same overall length. Not crazy about having to do that.

Shot a large whitetail doe this last hunting season. The round was a 200gr XTP running 1320fps. About a 20 yard shot broad side hitting a rib going in and blew apart, causing very little damage to the lung. Had to shoot the poor girl 4 times to finish her off, not good. The one thing I did notice was there was a large amount of hair drug into the wound channels. Very perplexing, if anything you would think the hair would plug the HP and not open up. Maybe someone else here could shed some light on the subject.

Those 200XTPs don't like to be driven fast for use on deer. About 1000fps is plenty. At 1000fps they act like a controlled expansion bullet. Kind of strange the 200gr .451 XTP is right the opposite. I have shot them over 1400fps from my .460 Rowland and they hang together just fine.

Maybe it's a good thing I never sent one after any game this year ... My hunting load is 21.0 grains of 2400 under a 200 XTP. My 13" MGM barrel sends these downrange at 1550 fps and is insanely accurate.

This sow fell to a 200 XTP at 1300 FPS. That load was 10.5 grains of Unique. She went 25-30 yards and down with a good blood trail. I gave her to a family, so I cant comment on internal damage.

I like 200 class bullets ... are the Speer considered the best?

Being a bonded bullet it will hold up much better than a cup and core bullet like the XTP. I haven't shot an XTP that wasn't accurate, but the problem I've had with them is they just don't hold up well when they hit bone. Now that's just my experience and it's also limited to 44 caliber bullets. Haven't had any problems with the 357 or 452 caliber bullets in the XTP yet.
