It took until the last chance but good luck prevailed. Alabama's season actually goes thru today 10 Feb but hard rain made Sunday 9 Feb the last usable day. I left early (1430) to get up to the top to intercept the usual route but ran into about 8 casual hikers wondering around my small hunting place. After a nicer than they deserved exchange they moved off but apparently circled back right into the path the deer usually take. I had no options so I just sat and hoped they moved out before any deer came that way. They ran two small does right to me so I was encouraged but sat wondering what and how many they ran back up the mountain. I hunted as low as property lines allowed until 1545 then moved back up to the planned stand.
Thirty minutes later two medium (good eating size) does wondered off the top so I assumed the hikers were out of the area. They came right toward me so I stood and got ready with my trigger sticks. They were very nervous and I assumed that was all the hiker scent as the wind was good for my position. They came to about 25 or 30 yards but limbs or angles prevented a shot. Finally one was almost broadside but my two legged trigger stick slipped and hit the metal stand. I thought I was busted but they settled down and one took a couple steps where a frontal shoulder to the off side shoulder angle was available. I normally go right behind the shoulder but based on advice here I went for the shoulder. This was the initiation of the recent Lipsey production Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter Bisley in .45 Colt shooting the HSM Bear Loads 325 grain wide flat nose gas checked factory ammo with advertised 1155 fps. Topped with Leupold 2.5-6 x32 scope.
Shot entered a little more forward than planned but still broke both shoulders and must have hit the main neck artery. She made it 40 yards in an arcing death run with impressive blood trail especially for a solid-like bullet. Of course complete pass thru with caliber entry and exit. Front of both lungs were pierced but blood loss from the neck was main cause.
Too dark for pictures but standard doe. Backstrap and tenderloin in large pieces but rest sliced for jerky since I have breakfast sausage left from last year.
Since I am still relatively new to handgun hunting, I need to figure out the shooting rest/sticks for a ladder stand without any type of shelf. I have a single leg trigger stick and that may be better but getting the scope at arm?s length was the main issue I had and it also resulted in the clang that almost busted me. I plan to build some handgun friendly elevated shooting blinds but I have so many ladder stands I need to be able to hunt them as well. It has been a good year and now it is time for load development with the 250 grain Deep Curls for possible hogs in April and July. Following 45MAN in load development so lots to do. Thanks all.

Congratulations on taking that deer with one of the very best six guns you could possibly use. Are you sure that Leupold is a 2X6? Either way it would be hard to beat that set up for deer.
45man will be a great resource on what to use, he's taken a boat load of game with 45's.
Anyway you could bolt a bracket onto your stand so you could attach an extended mount that could be popped in or out as needed?

Do what you want about rests,,,, But it is best to practice offhand shooting. A good trigger with your setup should be easy.
Nothing wrong with the ammo you have, especially for hogs. take em right behind the ear, or between the ear and eye, and you will have it done.

Sixshot, Scope could be 2.5 to 8 vs 6 but in the tight cover I hunt, I leave it on 2.5.

CT, I do like the HSM loads, every load I ever shot including the 454 stuff was very accurate. Being a handloader and hearing the performance of the Deep Curl, I have to try them. I will for sure keep the Bear Loads for the hogs if the water jug test does not pan out with the DC's. As far as off-hand, I need lots of trigger time to feel comfortable with such a long barrel and weight. My off-hand preference is a GP-100 in .44 Special with fiber optic front sight.

SHORT 30: WTG!

"ADAPT OR DIE". I USE ALL CAPS, NOT BECAUSE I AM YELLING, BUT BECAUSE IT IS AN OLD HABIT FROM MY ARMY DAYS, PLUS IT IS EASIER TO TYPE AND READ.

Of course you can try the DCs and they may be just right for the hogs you chase. If you want, Leadhead Bullets has a good bullet for the 45. It is the 335 gr LWN. They are patterned after the Beartooth bullets and several have found them to be very accurate. Cheaper and easier to get than the Beartooth.
BTW you can smooth up that GP-100 to be buttery smooth and it becomes one fine DA pistol. And with the correct bullets it becomes excellent for deer. And as I said before place that bullet in the right place and you got even the biggest hog.
Stay after it.

Well done on the doe! My son uses a scout scope on his 7-30 Waters for that reason , it is an intermediate eye relief scope and works well for him. I think his is a Bushnell 2x7 .Something as simple as a piece of paracord tied across the stand to push the rest against will help.

Congratulations!! Try the Vanguard Veo 2 shooting sticks. It has a base the won't fall thru a stand and it articulates. Very nice!

to make your shooting sticks tree stand friendly you can put practice plastic golf balls on the bottom of your stick legs and slide it up about an inch from bottom.hot melt glue or duct tape will keep them in place. put the feet back on or leave them off with the spikes showing. they will settle into the expanded metal tree stand base. if you tether one shooting stick leg loosely to your leg, body or the stand, you wont have to go back down and pick them up. mine have left the tree stand without permission several times before i started tying them in.

I use a tripod shooting stick by Primos. I put all three legs together and use the rubber strap to keep them together. That keeps the legs from being able to fall thru the floor if the stand. It also works on the ground. I killed a good buck and a does using them thodnpast season.

Thanks all for the ideas. I will try to apply some of it to the two sticks I have. I like the trigger stick since they give me the height I need when standing. I thought the single leg might be the answer but keeping the two legs together gives me the same benefit plus keeps the foot from falling thru as suggested above and means I have the bipod benefit if needed before getting in the stand. Several of my stands are the older single, small ladder type so I have to lean back and extend arms out to get scope to full view. Now that I am committed to handguns, I will work to expand the doubles and build a few elevated boxes - and work on more freehand shooting. Thanks again to all.
