my son took to shooting a 7-30 waters this year and is having a blast with it in his contender, i got thinking about a 7-08 in my encore as this is what my wife shoots in a rifle and it seems to kill like a lightning bolt. what kind of velocity are you getting along with bullet performance. Dawn is shooting the hornady reduced recoil load with a 120 grain bullet and the terminal damage even on the elk she shot was impressive.

I don't have any experience with an Encore nor elk, but my XP100 in 7-08 is a great deer gun. Three bucks taken so far with none traveling more than a few yards after the shot. 2500+fps with a 140 grain Nosler Partition is easily achieved out of the 15" barrel. Many on here have more experience than I with specialty pistols in 7-08 and I think they will all say it is a great Handgun cartridge.

nice to know - i didnt figure 10" barrel loss was going to make that big of a difference. i figure a 120-130 grain bullet at max speed should do work to 300-400 yards.

Sierra 120's are getting 2600 fps, but I haven't hunted with them yet.

Pick the right bullet and it should perform well out to 400 yards. I've had luck with the AR platform bullets for moderate velocity cartridges that are designed to function at lower terminal velocity (300bo and 458socom). Many of the bullets advertised for long range use also have lower terminal velocity requirements. You typically have to ask the manufacturer if they have velocity recommendations.

Most of my knowledge of these things focuses on Barnes bullets that I use for hunting. For the 139gn 7mm LRX bullet is (30295) they suggest 1500fps for 2x diameter expansion typically say add 100fps more for hunting use. Most of their standard tipped or hollow point bullets are 1800 or 1900 fps.

I have used the 120 NBT and the 140 NBT for everything up to mule deer bucks in a 14" 7mm-08 with great success

Dave
I have had great success with the Sierra 120 PH out of my SSK 16? Encore in 7x57 Improved. Run these at 2850fs.
Took this Buck in 2008 at 40 yards broadside, 1-inch entry into the ribs with 3 inches of internal damage and a 2-inch exit. Buck ran 54 yards and fell over backwards. Love the 7mm caliber!

MY GOOD FRIEND GEORGE FAERBER USES A REAR GRIP XP 7-08 WITH REGULAR REMINGTON FACTORY AMMO (140gr I BELIEVE) TO GREAT EFFECT ON DEER, HOGS AND AOUDAD IN TEXAS, AND MAYBE EVEN SOME CRITTERS IN HIS HOME STATE OF ALASKA. NOT AN EXOTIC CALIBER, BUT SEEMS TO BE AN EXCELLENT SP ROUND.
