Will the Lee carbide dies for 500 S&W work for reloading 500 JRH?

Yes I would say so. It is a good round too. Very efficient in a 6 inch or shorter barrel.

I got mine back in 2018 and in my research I ended up getting the RCBS 500 S&W dies marked mag/special so I would not have to cut down the crimp die to accommodate the 500JRH case. This may have changed now that the JRH is a little more common but if you want to be sure and don't have a means to cut the crimp die down a bit, I would recommend the RCBS die set #23812 and I would also recommend a separate roll crimp die which is RCBS die #23838 (if you have a press with at least 4 stations, I like to crimp separately). I have built over 1000 rounds with this setup and it works great. Just my 2 cents.

If you have access to a lathe then you can buy whatever die you want and modify it accordingly, however if you don't buy the RCBS 500 S&W dies. They don't require any metal to be removed.

Also call up RCBS and buy a 50AE expander die. If you don't AND you don't ream your cases you will buckle the case in the middle as the 500 S&W expander is just a touch too large for a non-reamed 500 JRH case.

Wow, RCBS really biffed on the expander die. I have 440 WFN bullets that don?t have that long of a body from base to crimp groove.

Not really. The expander is designed for the 500 S&W. Because we are cutting .2" off of the case the internal case taper causes a more severe interference fit of the expander die in the shorter 500 JRH case. Eventually you get enough friction it overcomes the yield strength of the brass and it buckles. You would see a similar issue if you attempted to load some of the really heavy (500gr+) 500 S&W bullets as well.

If you want to use the 500 S&W expander die and/or want to run really heavy bullets you are going to need to ream your brass to thin down the internal taper. Unless you have a lathe at your disposal this is going to be somewhere between tricky and impossible. Lee Martin over at Singleactions.com has a thread where he talks about the necessary specs for the reamer.

Like I said, this should only be a requirement if you want to run really heavy bullets. If you are going to be sticking in the 440 and down range, just get the 50AE expander and be done with it.
