Gonna get a side arm for back up/hunting. It is going to be a Magnum Research BFR. That is a given. Game to be hunted is deer on up. Saw Max Prasac take a cape buffalo with one in 500 JRH. I am not opposed to trying that some day. The calibers I am debating are the .500 JRH or the 480 Ruger/475 Linebaugh.
What says the group? Which one of the two would y'all pick?
The .44 mag is out. I don't do normal very well.

In those calibers, it's a matter of personal preference, performance is going to be close. Although the .475 Linebaugh/480 Ruger ammo may be a bit easier to find if one doesn't reload.

480 Ruger is what I would choose from the group. Main thing, is get what you want! It may end up being one of each!

Then get what you want. Any of the three will work just fine.

Any time I hunt something that can bite me, my FA .475 Linebaugh goes. Worked a few years ago when a wounded black bear wanted me. A 275 gr. X stopped him at 6 FEET, rather convincingly. It also worked on Cape buff and rhino.

I would go with 475 Linebaugh and 480 Ruger as one cylinder or 500 JRH with the 500 AE as an extra cylinder. Bisley style grip and try an octagon barrel if you want some flair. Myself, I like the 475 Linebaugh and 480 Ruger combination. Just food for thought from a big-bore non normal aficionado that has a model 460V and a model 500 with a 6.5 inch half-lug barrel.

I worked my way up the power scale from .22LR-.475L and all in between. I stopped at 475L and it is a BFR. I can't believe that I would be lacking killing power on any animal with the 475L and its capabilities. Most of my hunting are animals up to elk size but, if it were mostly animals larger than elk, I would go to the 50's. Another option is to buy both!

Since deer is the biggest thing on the schedule currently. But, if you want bigger....just because-Go Bigger!

My son is getting a Bfr in 45.70. He likes the odd stuff as well.

I have both in the Bisley model. 475 has 7.5? barrel & 500 JRH has 5.5? barrel.
If I had to do all over again. The 475 would have been 5.5? barrel.
Montana bullet works has mucho hard cast bullet weight options. BFR?s love hard cast lead bullets.
Lee dies work great for 475 Linebaugh. You will need RCBS dies for 500 Special/500 S&W Magnum
