The problem with the 300, in my opinion is the light for caliber bullets, and questionable expansion of heavier bullets. A 125 grain Sierra expands well at 100 yards, but tends to come un hinged at close range. Heavier bullets hold up better at close range ( federal 150 grain factory ) but expansion is questionable.

Your in between a rock and a hard place with caliber restrictions. My vote is for something like a 375 JDJ if you reloaded but you wouldn't be legal.

I don't know enough about a 460 to say one way or another, other than it's probably not a good choice if you are new to hand cannons. I've shot them and The concussion is unreal. Recoil isn't bad but it's hard to concentrate when you know your going to get your ear drums blasted out even when wearing plugs and muffs.

Sorry, I didn't see that you already own a 460 Smith. An encore in 454 or 460 may be the way to go.

I would start with 300 BO for deer, and then work toward the 460 frame and barrel.
Take care of your known primary hunting first.
A 125 NBT in the BO should work great for deer

I agree with your thoughts on starting with your primary hunting needs. However, I?m having a difficult time locating factory ammo in the 125 NBT since I don?t reload but I have 5 boxes of the 110 Barnes. Is the Nosler BT far superior and something I should truly seek out? My current AR pistol shoots the Barnes very well but I have yet to harvest an animal with it. Thank you.

Sight it in with the Barnes and take it hunting.

Another step completed. I ordered a stainless steel and synthetic contender G2 this afternoon. Thanks for all of the help so far to everyone that has contributed.

I'm new to this forum. I live in Greensboro N.C. and have roughly 20 plus acres in va where I hunt. I've glowed up around hunting and recreational shooting. Can't wait to learn from you folks.

Welcome!
What type(s) of handgun do you intend to use?

Rcems, I'm not far from you. I'm in between Raleigh and Rocky Mount.
