I've been shooting my Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley 3.75" 44mag quite a bit in preparation for deer season, and something I didn't think about is with the short ejection rod, I have to manually pull the empty cases from the cylinder. Got me thinking if a double action would be easier in general to load and unload while hunting.

RB... I`ve never hunted with that short of a single action barrel so I say its looks like your going to find out... good luck....I remember shooting a large boar after the sunset with a 4 5/8" Blackhawk in 45 Colt during a snowstorm and having the bushes smack me in the face as I was short stroking the ejector rod while reloading... that`s one I`ll never forget.

I've only dabbled in revolvers but have gravitated to DAs for that reason. I have found that the SA really cuts down on the ammo consumption rate at the range compared to the DA. In the end, 6 rounds is a lot, more then most hunting firearms carry.

Can you clutch the gun in one hand and operate the ejection rod with your pointer finger and use your other hand remove and feed empty/full cases to speed it up?

This is what I currently do, but it's not super fast.

I probably should have just stuck with the Bisley Hunter. It was easier to shoot accurately.

I HAVE HUNTED FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS WITH 5 SHOT FREEDOM ARMS REVOLVERS LOADED WITH 4 ROUNDS ONLY, INCLUDING 10 AFRICAN SAFARIS WHERE THE FA REVOLVERS WERE MY PRIMARY HUNTING ARMS, NEVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH NOT ENUFF ROUNDS IN THE GUN, NOR TOO HARD OR SLOW TO RELOAD.

"ADAPT OR DIE". I USE ALL CAPS, NOT BECAUSE I AM YELLING, BUT BECAUSE IT IS AN OLD HABIT FROM MY ARMY DAYS, PLUS IT IS EASIER TO TYPE AND READ.

Never had the need to reload a single action fast. for that matter have not had to reload my double action fast in a hunting situation. with that being said, I carry a speed loader handy. just makes me feel better.

I am kinda with the two above.
In many years never really shot more than 3 rounds.

If I was going into a situation where I felt like I was really going to do some shooting. I would take one of my poor mans race guns.

What ever it was we were shooting at would look like a collider.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Wasn't necessary worried about speed, more of just the ease of loading and unloading. Short ejection rod annoys me after having gotten used to the Bisley Hunter previously. I thought the shorter barrel would be easier to carry, which is true, but just little nuances I didn't think about when I got the shorty.

After reading a little closer, I understand your problem. Kind of like trying to eject the .357 cases from a two inch J frame. Can't quite get them out all the way after shooting unless you give it a good slap with your hand.

I agree with your assessment that a double action would be easier to eject the rounds and faster to reloa. That said, the five or six you have will probably be enough and reloading won't be a concern.

my Ruger new model single six is that way. that is the only single action I have left. it is annoying but has never cost me an animal for not being able to reload quickly.
I do agree that it is annoying after being able to push cases all the way out then having a gun that wont.

I have now killed 22 whitetails with handguns and many more with rifles, shotguns and archery equipment. Of the 22 killed with handguns I have only had to shoot more than once one time and that was a running deer that I should have passed on but did end up killing. You should be fine.

I just sold my last SA, a Single Six Hunter. Double actions just fit me better. Never worry about loading though, even when squirrel hunting with the Single Six.
