It would take a lot to get me to choose a 10mm over a 44 mag for hunting, but who out there hunts with a 10mm? What gun and load do you hunt with?

With how hard it's been to find the revolver I want, I may open up my options some.

I don't hunt with one - yet. I just picked up my first 10mm last week. I don't have any reloading components or dies for it yet, either, so I bought a case of federal fusions. I've seen great results with the fusion line of ammo and decided to give it a whirl since I don't have time to hunt down components for 10mm as of now. I've got it zeroed in and it'll do 2.5" groups at 50 yards with me resting my arms. If I rest the gun on anything, it'll do 15" groups at 50 yards. I look forward to giving it a try on whitetail this season. I do not like chasing brass though, and it's throwing brass 15-20 feet. We'll see how it all plays out. Oh......it's the Springfield 1911 TRP 5" with trijicon RMR.

I set up a G40 for a friend a few years ago, but he hasn't deer hunted since then. With a slightly longer after market barrel it was giving good velocities compared to the published values from factory ammo. IMHO it would work fine for hunting. I felt that the glock trigger dictated the range limit of that setup.

KRal, I've got the SA 1911 TRP longslide - 6 inch barrel coming. Looks like a serious 1911 and MO deer better stay clear. Sounds like yours is a shooter!

I have a G40 with a ZEV aftermarket trigger in it, but I?ve killed more hogs with my G20 simply because I carry it more. I can?t really say I?ve hunted with it, just have had it on me when hogs were encountered. Several of them were killed in my corral trap, some were just unlucky.

The 10 mm is a good killer up to whitetail size, although I?ve not killed a deer with it, they aren?t as tough as a large hog.

Mark,
The 6? is what I had my eye on, but ran across a fabulous deal on the 5? that I just couldn?t pass up. I?m sure the MO deer will not like it quite as well.

I hunt mostly with my 44 and 460 but I'm also a 10 mm junkie my 610 is running 165 sierras at 1390fps with aa9. It's topped with a Burris ff3 killed a yote at 80 yards a few weeks ago with it. Kimber 1911 is stoked with blue dot and 150 noslers and picked up a Springfield osp last week in 10mm and put a Trijicon on it today and it shot decent with factory Sig ammo. Get the 610 great trigger and accurate and I use the Rimz plastic moon clips. Wouldn't hesitant to take a doe or small buck with it and took 2 decent pigs last year with it.

I have the TRP 6? long slide it shoots quite well.
I am shooting handloaded 180 Winchester HP over BE-86
I really like the gun. But my eyes just do not do as well as they did when I was young. I shoot my poor mans race guns with the dot sight much better.
Once you get use to those the dot the target sights seem so large.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I carry a Glock 20SF with a 6? KKM barrel and a JPoint reflex sight. I?ve yet to take any game with it though.

I hunt with a 10mm have several (probably too many)

1.) Glock model 40 with open sights Zev trigger and 7? KKM barrel with ti firing pin and spring kit. Very accurate excellent velocities shoots anything I feed it.

2.) Glock model 20 with new LW 9? barrel LW long slide setup with a RMR and a Zev after market trigger and Ti firing pin and spring kit. Accurate great velocities and loves 165-180 grain bullets.

3.) Remington R1 6? 1911 very accurate better than the much more expensive Springfield long slide I have. Open sights easy to shoot easy to carry.

4.) Hunter model Sig Sauer great gun heavy accurate too short to legally use here but great well built gun open sites shoots anything I feed it the mags are short so loading you have to load close to the case mouth taper.

5.) Springfield long slide Operator this gun so far is disappointment to me but I am going to put an RMR see if it helps with accuracy.

6.) S&W revolver 4? accurate great handgun fantastic single action and double action trigger will shoot just about anything I feed it. Although recoil with heavier bullets can be tough on the shooter.

7.) Ruger GP100 defensive carry handgun boot grips and open sights. Accurate little revolver much prefers lighter weight bullets and is easier to handle with said bullets. I don?t use this for hunting but carry it allot.

8.) TC MGM 18? barrel for my contender great little carbine and 100 yard deer gun extremely accurate easy to carry and will take deer not issue shooting anything you feed it.

9.) Kriss Vector carbine. FUN great gun not easy to lug around hunting but it works Ultradot mounted it is accurate and consistent.

10.) HiPoint well it shoots day in and day out I use this burn up ,is mammoth not very accurate not fun to shoot really not much good to say about it.

11.) Reader custom Texas Ranger made from RI Arsenal don?t shoot this ,icy it?s ok it?s reliable it is not a hunting gun and too heavy for carry really so it sits mostly in the safe. Paid too much for it and I am not big Reeder fan so we will leave it at that.

12.) Colt Delta 1911 this is great gun easy to carry very accurate and reliable I want to add an aftermarket barrel to it to make it 6? for hunting. Of the 1911 I have this and R1 are the most accurate.

Within 50 yards the 10 is really good hunting handgun yes you can stretch it out if someone said here is a 44 and a 10 I would choose the 44 all day every day. Even being a 10mm fan boy. But I like my 10mm just feel it?s important to keep the velocity up and distance down. I have good success with XTP and Lehigh defense bullets in taking deer. Cast is OK but not as good as the 140-180 grain bullets at higher velocities.

I have the Rock Island 1911 in 10mm and love it. Was shooting at a target at about 180 yards this year. Quite pleased with how it shot and may try it for deer this next season.

My brother and I have talked about a handgun hunt for hogs in Texas. If we get to do it the RI is definitely going to be there.

I also have the Springfield TRP 6" 10mm. Just got back from hunting with it. Didn't score, but have ALL the confidence in the world in that gun. 200g XTP and a good dose of Longshot was giving me excellent accuracy. I didn't score with the TRP this year, but I did score. That story is on another thread...

Do you have the factory sights on yours? I find the rear notch way to wide lots of wiggle room I am thinking about putting on a red dot sight.

Yes I do. It is certainly wider than I like, but I've gotten to where I'm pretty good with it anyway. It's by far the best shooting 1911 I've had, once I got the load dialed in and the recoil spring changed out.
