In your own opinion,will a revolver in 454 or 460 have more recoil than Encore pistol in 7-08? I hunted with the 7-08 and looking to get a revolver but curious about the recoil aspect. My shots will be 100 yards max. Thanks in advance.

The Encore in 7mm-08 will typically be easier to shoot from the bench or field positions and will have less felt recoil.
If you put a solid-bottomed brake on the Encore, it will go to puff-cake recoil.

The Big S&W X-frame has a brake.

Choose the type of handgun you want to hunt with...You may end up getting one of each before it is all said and done.

The weight of the handgun and the bullet weight you choose will also change the amount of felt recoil .

I have Encore barrels in 260 Remington, 7.62x54R, as well as 356 Winchester. The 7.62x54 and 356 both have Four Gill Muzzle Brakes. The 260 has the Bullberry drilled brake. One hand on the grip and the other on a sandbag under the grip. Recoil is pretty much a non-issue. I also have brakes on my 6.5x30 JDJ, 35 Bullberry, and 357 Maximum Contender barrels.

I wish I had put muzzle brakes on my Contender barrels years ago. My first Encore barrel (260) I bought used with a brake. The 7.62x54R and 356 Win barrels both had brakes installed before I fired them.

My 480 Super Redhawk recoils much harder than any of my single shots.

Get a good Four Gill Muzzle Brake on the 7-08. Off sandbags it will be a tack driving piece of machinery.

The 454 will recoil much more than your 7mm-08.

If you are not a fan of recoil, I would suggest a 41 magnum or 44 magnum. Just remember, every platform is different. A super blackhawk may recoil more than a super redhawk. If you are serious about the 454, I suggest the super redhawk as it is very forgiving.

my 460 had a brake but was still stout with 365 grn cast loads on the upper end. recoil is perceived differently by each shooter, but it is still there no matter who shoots it. revolvers transfer recoil different and i believe more harsh than the encore or other single shots. your mileage may vary based on gun and loads. some are more user friendly than others. if you want to turn your 7-08 into a pussycat put a good brake on it. porting can help you with your revolvers. I agree with Brenden about the super redhawk being the best revolver for heavy hitters in the 454.

I'd probably have to shoot them side by side to give you a good comparison, but in my experience, the answer is yes. Big bores like the various 460s I've used tend to recoil worse than bottleneck cartridge-chambered Encores.

I shot 100gn 25-06 loads from a factory encore pistol and it isn't near the recoil that I find a mild 250gn 454 load in SRH to be. In addition to bullet size and momentum, platform size and weight distribution make a big difference.

I have a 5 inch muzzlebrake equipped barrel X-frame revolver and use it as a platform to shot 454 Casull comfortably. If you get a 460 S&W magnum revolver 454 Casull is much more efficient from a short barrel.
