Hey folks, I just purchased a Used/Like New Freedom Arms Premier Grade .454 71/2" with SSK 3 ring mount and Leupold 4X scope.
I paid 950.00 bucks and got an Uncle Mikes Bandolier Holster with it. Always wanted one and when I walked into my dealer today I saw it I had to have it. My question is this, The dealer told me it is not safe to carry on a loaded chamber but he showed me what he called the "notch cock" position and said that it is safe to carry that way. I own several Ruger single actions and have never dealt with Freedom Arms or Colts with half cock or notch cock positions. Is what I was told true, should I carry on an empty chamber and is it not safe to carry hammer down?

I do not own a FA, but I have heard that is true. I also saw on their website where they state to never dry fire any of their guns, use snap-caps instead. Someone else here should be able to correct me if I'm wrong and shed more light.

It is NOT safe to carry a FA gun with 5 loaded because there is no transfer bar. Only load 4 and leave the empty chamber under the hamer. Yes, there is a hammer position that prevents the hammer from contacting the firing pin under normal circumstances but if the gun were dropped it could discharge. Besides what can you do with 5 that 4 wouldn't accomplish?

I would strongly suggest that you call FA and request an owners manual.

Thanks Gary--I talked to the dealer again about it and he assured me that carrying 5 with the hammer in the "notch" position was safe, however like you said four is plenty and I usually only need one cause I dont take "Hail Mary" shots. I will be getting an owners manual also. Again, many thanks for the reply.

Well the dealer isn't the one that's going to get shot if he's wrong. Freedom Arms will tell you to never load 5.
