I finally semi-finished my savage striker in 358 winchester. it started life as a 510 model in 7-08 which shot really well. I got lusty eyes for something different and purchased an ER Shaw magnum contour 358 win barrel from Midway. I had my buddy chuck do some magic to it by cutting it down to 15.5 inches and adding a radial brake to it. A Jim Rockwell laminate stock in woodland camo was ordered as the barrel is .900 dia. Chuck finished the gunsmithing work and i changed out the barrel, glass bedded the action, remounted the scope and after some time actually got to shoot it in. I had one box of factory hornady ammo that was adequate with about an inch and a half groups at 100 yards but not what i was looking for. I had posted on the site for loads and got some good places to start and finally settled on 48.0 grains of IMR 4895 (which is a compressed load) and 200 grain flex tip hornady bullets as a starting point and gave them a run. An amazing 7/16" group from the first shots! I figured that i wasn't going to try any other loads until i could get them over a chronograph and do a few more groups. I still have some stock contouring and finish work to do but, I can hunt with it and have a hog trip in my future to test it out.

update on the 358 load of 48 grains of IMR 4895. I shot a string of three shots in -3 degree weather over the chrono. only at 50 yards to check the velocity, . three rounds were 2469,2469,2484. all rounds went into a bughole. with that information i am relatively sure that this load is a keeper, and I can now reload more for hunting. I am really liking this setup and am very happy with the velocity of the 200 grainers. I am hoping that this rig will do it all from big to small.
