My pet load for my 375 JDJ has been the 260 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip over a healthy charge of Varget. As my stash of BTs is running low, I am looking for a new load. I want to go with the Hornady 270 grn. While I am swapping bullets, I was thinking about swapping powders as well. My barrel has the SSK Arrestor muzzle brake and Varget produces a nice fireball for those shots at dusk. I was wondering what powders the 375 shooters on the website use for less of the flash for low light shots with a brake.

Try Reloader 15 by Alliant...very close in burn rate to Varget and I've not noticed much of a fireball at all. I use it in my .338JDJ#2.

try AA2520 as well.

Waht are you wanting to shoot with it? The 270 Hornady SP is a tad tough for whitetail. The 220 FP is pure poison on them. I use AA2520 for all bullet weights from 220 to 300.

I have worked with H-4895 and IMR-4064 with Hornady's 225 gr. SP and 270 gr. SP. I have not noticed any major flash either. If flash is a concern, it appears that all the above powder recomendations (AA2520, Varget, 4064 and RL-15) have the same burn rates. H-4895 is a touch faster (Hornady 6th manual, pg 38). I have not played with the 220 gr bullet yet.

Get some of the Nosler 260grn Accubonds if you want a 260grn bullet but they are tougher than the BT's.
I shoot the Hornady 220grn flat point with 49 grns of IMR4895 and they are running 1980fps from my SSK 14" Stainless barrel. Bad medicine for deer and hogs.
I shot some of the 270 grn Hornadys but didn't get the groups I wanted and ran out of time for some testing due to weather and time. I might try them again this spring as I have about 4 boxes of them.
I'm also going to try some Sierra bullets this spring. I talked to the Sierra factory and they have a 200grn flat point that expands well below the velocity I'm shooting. Should be a good deer round.

Don't use the Xs in a Contender, but in Encore would be ok.

To answer the question about a substitute for Varget on the 270 Hornady. Don't bother, it is best choice. How much of a problem is muzzle flash. Never really noticed a problem with Varget on that score, compared to the ball powders, anyway. Loads should be almost the same for the 270 as the 260 NBT since the 260 is a harder bullet.

Load what shoots the best. Besides the fireball looks cool.

Because most people do not take the care to load X's properly and wind up messing up the barrel with the increased pressure.

Been shooting the 210gr X out of my 375 Win. with absolutely no problem at all. That bullet should be a barn burner out of the JDJ.

JD himself reccomends against it because the solid copper bullet will increase pressure unless you have adjusted load data. You will have to reduce your loads for the barnes and you will not get the same ballistic performance that you can get from a normal jacketed bullet.
