I just picked up a .358 jdj w/ t'sob mount and scope for 200 bucks. It has had 20 rounds through it. What a deal huh? Well Im new to this round and would like to know it's limits and its uses, recoil loads etc. One thing I heard that was the 250gr bullets dont expand. What would be a good load for hogs/deer/bear/ elk ? What is the largest critter one could take with this round and it not place in the "stunt" catagory? oh yeah and got the dies too.

if it turns out ya don't like the recoil er anything.....i got a 10" 357mag(be good for 357max rechamber also), 2.5x scope, mount, 200rnds of new win brass, n maybe a bunch of 180gr penn cast boolits i'd trade ya for it

i'd THINK the 180gr hornady ssp should work for hogs, deer, n bear. shoots great in my 35rem, but of course the 358 will even get more velocity......and punishment on your end

elk.....better let others give a view there, but what about a 225gr nosler bt?

I'll send you right to the horses mouth on this one. Give JD Jones a call at 740-264-0176, he developed this round. Tell him what you'll use it for, and he'll recommend the bullets for it. For another buck or so, he'll also send you some reloading data. He's good that way.

That is a VERY good round! I used mine to take an Alakan Moose, CA boar and CA mule deer. I used the Remington 200 Gr. R/N on the Moose. He was dead with the first shot but went down with the second. He never walked 10 yards. The 180Gr Hornady SS bullet worked good on everything else.

I sent the reloading data opff with the bbl when I sold it so I can't help you there.

You did REAL good!

Bill

I had one a long time ago...Wish I still had it! The 180's will do everything you need. I took an Elk with the 180 grainer's in a .35Rem. But, if big bear and big elk are on the menu. I would look at the 200gr Hornady or 220gr Speer Flat point. AA-2520 and RE-7 were good powders to use.

yeah....heck i forgot about the 200gr spitzer from hornady. i bet it would be great on the lil tougher game at the lil higher velocity. i got a heck of a deal on 1000 200gr hornady spitzer blems from lock stock n barrel a while back. i bought them to have cheap shooters in my 35rem, n save the 180gr ssp's for hunting.
maybe i'll just save em for a future 358x444

I wouldn't hesitate to use the Hornady 180 grain on any of the game animals you just mentioned. I have a 358x444IMP and that thing is definitely accurate. I don't think recoil will be terrible, if it is then just put a brake on it. There are several outstanding companies that could add a brake. SSK, OTT, Magnaport, Holland. You got a really good deal there, just keep and don't give it to Kyode, he doesn't need it cuz he's got that 35 rimmed.

yeah, it has a brake on it already. My biggest concern realy, will be ammo as I dont reload now. I did find a place called "Superior Ammunition". They have 358jdj for 40 bucks/box of 20. Not sure what they are like, ever heard of 'em?

For the bigger animals I would use the 225 gr Nosler Partitions. The front half is fragile enough to get expantion and penetration would be good. Frank & Audrey Murtland both used the 358JDJ on Buffalo and Banteng in Australia using 225 Swift bullets.
