Hi, new guy here. I just puchased a new T/C G2 contender with 22 lr. match barrel. I would like to do some deer hunting this year and would like to know what caliber to shoot with, with low recoil.

.243 is a low to medium recoil deer caliber in a 15" bbl.. Or anything up to a 30.06 or 308 if you put a break on it..
I am using a 7mm08 with a break and its real nice and low recoil... Good Luck
Thanks, Shawn

those are "encore only" rounds and too much fer the contender
do ya reload or shoot factory?......then all will have a better idea on their favorite picks.
recoil is gonna vary in opinion among people. most of em are not bad at all with a bunch o practice, which ya need anyway.

if i didn't reload......i think i'd do the 30-30. if i was planning on reloading in the near future, i'd do the 30-30 ackley improved n shoot factory ammo in it for a while until i was ready to start the handloads. then you'd already have fireformed cases ready to go.
7-30 would be a great one also......but i'd think 30-30 factory ammo cheaper n easier to find handily.
6.8rem might be nice too. not sure how well the factory loads do, or how available they are yet.
357mag.......i'd prefer a 44mag, but a lil more recoil there. still nuthin any normal handguner shouldn't be able to handle, especially in factory fodder. bout any 240gr bullet ammo would do deer fine n you can find some brands fer roughly $20+/50 rnds.

like kyode said...30-30 ai,midwayusa.com sells factory barrels.shoot regular 30-30 ammo and save the brass, then when you start rolling your own you are set...read the article on this site about the 30-30 ai and you may be interested... then again there is a killer article on the 7-30 waters also...but factory ammo is not as readilly available for the 7-30 as it is for the good ol'30-30 !i will promise you that any route you go you will enjoy it....jim257

I hunt deer with the 7-30 Waters, .357 Maximum, and .44 Magnum. Recoil is relative, you have to supply the energy to get the job done. The 7-30 in a 14" is relatively soft, 44 mag a bit heavier. I don't reload and get all my hunting ammo from Reed's Ammunition and Research, www.reedsammo.com Tell him you're using a handgun and he will load 'em accordingly. Quite reasonable, too, and quick.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Welcome to the sport & the site gamhines! You don't say what kind of country you hunt or what you expect for shot distances & that could make a difference. For longer range stuff I'd probably look at the 7x30 Waters first. If all your shots are under 100 yds & you don't like the idea of the .44 mag (a very good round at that range) then you might consider the .357 Maximum. Ammo isn't on every shelf but it can be ordered & once you get a bit of brass it's as easy to load as the .357 mag or .38 special & uses the same dies. Should do fine on whitetail to 100 yds. Of course you can also shoot .38 special & .357 mag rounds in a .357 Max. for "plinking". The 30-30 AI is a great wildcat round.

I would have to agree with the guys on the 30-30. Wonder if Hornady's new LeverEvolution ammunition would be a big advantage over standard factory ammo in the 30-30 TC pistol?

With the improved BC of the new bullet, you'd think they would perform better. I may have to pick up a 30-30 AI just to try it out.
Rod, too.

I have abarrel in 7-30 Waters, shoots great and very low recoil. The 120 gr. bullet works great on deer.
You can run but you die tired.

If you are a reloader and like something a bit different, check out the .30 Merrill (.225 Win case necked to .30 cal). This cartridge provides 30-30 rifle ballistics from a 10" pistol barrel, and will handle bullets up to 170 gr..

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I bought my self a 44 Remmington Mag. 14" barrel for my T/C. I took it to the range to try out. recoil wasn't as bad as I thought or heard about. Bought the barrel from Midway.
