are we responsible for getting this changed?

have a lil "the kentucky sportsman" newspaper circular here that officially says handguns are now legal for elk in ky......beginning THIS season

they state the regulation as allowing ANY handgun with a barrel at least 6" long, and firing a cartridge capable of at least maintaining 500 ft/lbs of energy at 100yrds with a bullet diameter of .270" or greater. it also states.....this will include some .41 caliber handguns equal or more powerful than the .44 caliber magnum.

sounds great! thanks to all that helped make this happen

Kentucky….no place like home.

Hope I'm doing this right, to frame a quote for response.

Fabulous, once again a step in the right direction (no offense to left-eyes). But, it has a gray area as wide as my Lowrance over muddy bottom. Are they going to chrono your pistola on the spot, weigh your bullet, check the ballistic coeficient, measure the barometric pressure..............? Just because the headstamp reads .454 Casull doesn't mean it ain't flying at .45 cowboy. Don't get me wrong, this is a wonderful thing, but the rulemakers should be the shooters and their concience(s). Do y'all see what I'm gettin' at here.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Well I'm sure they were well intentioned and actually this rule is similar to the rule the rifle guys have to go by. To have passed a law less-restrictive than for that of rifles would have caused further uproar and scrutiny. It is a shame they added a barrel length restriction though. There are many 4 3/4 inch guns that are more than capable of taking an elk out to 100 yards or so. I wish lawmakers would learn that you can't rule & regulate people into responsibility - there is always a loophole.

I kinda think it was all of the responses sent to the Ky game and fish through here and a couple of other groups.I will give the 2nd district commisioner a call and see what he says. He pretty much assured me that there would be some changes and was very interested as to the power of many of our handguns in use today.
