What gun/caliber combination would you use on pronghorn antelope?

Contender or Encore? Do you roll your own? In a 'Tender guy so I'd go with a 7-30 Waters with a 120 Nos B-T. In an encore a .243 Win or .260 Rem are hard to beat.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Contender: 7-30 Waters w/120 BT's or 120grn VMax.
7 TCU w/ 120grn BT's - both good for around 200yd
309JDJ w/150grn Nosler BT's -custom barrel- good
for at least 300yds

Encore- 7BR w/120grn BT's or 120grn VMax 200-300 yd
243 w/100grn soft points 200-300 yd
260 w/120grn Nosler BT's - my favorite caliber
( I took a antelope w/this round at 425yd )
6.5 Rem Mag- w/120 Nosler BT's or 120grn Speer SP
(This is a custom shop barrel but very effective)
This barrel would be good for out to 500 yd with
good longrange pistol scope like the 3x12 BPlex
25-06 w/ 120 grn bullets
XP100 I have used the 7BR, w/120grn BT's, a .260 w/
120grn Speer Hot core and Nosler 120grn BT's.
A 6mm BR would be a good choice with 100grn
bullets.

Good luck.

Mike

I was sort of contemplating this situation. I looked at the TC Contender barrels that I have and the flattest shooting one is a .375 JDJ. I know it is a bit of overkill but the only other big game rounds would be the 44 magnum or 45-70 Govt.

I really don't have any other flat shooting barrels.

Hawkeye has it right. I've taken just over a dozen (maybe 15) Antelope now all but 3 have been with handguns (one with a rifle, two with muzzle loaders). I've taken them with 6.5TCU, 6mm BR, 7mm BR, 30 Herrett, 30 Bower AK and one I forget. By far the Nosler BT has worked the best in evey caliber. 120gr in the 6.5, 80gr in the 6mm, 140 in the 7mm (should have used the 120gr), 125gr in the 30 Herrett and 150gr in the 30 Bower AK. Four of those were dropped at 300 yards or just beyond, the closest was 75 yards with the 6.5 TCU. All were one shot kills. None ran further then 50 yards.

My son and I will head back to WY for this years HHI 20th anniversary Antelope hunt. Looks like we will be able to take five animals again, ah, more bullet testing! Love the speed goats.

If you are going to hunt with what you already have, I would use the 375 JDJ.
If I was to pick a factory barrel for the Contender it would be the 7x30 waters.

.308 with a 165 Nosler Ballistic Tip

.375 JDJ with the 225 gr. Hornady bullet
I have only killed two antelope with handguns and these worked for me.
