Anyone hear anything about a new law in NYS allowing young adults ages 14-20 to use a handgun while being supervised by a legal hand gun owner. I know what some of you are thinking. But for us this is a great step forward. I have always felt the curiosity factor was the most dangerous part of any gun. WOW TO THINK THEY MIGHT START PASSING LAW THAT MAKE SENSE

I didn't realize there was any place in the country you couldn't let a child shoot a handgun, my youngest is 5 and I help her shoot a little heritage 22 and my 12 year old is handling my super blackhawk with full house loads just fine. I thought Oregon was in the dark ages since you have to be 12 before you can hunt big game

I’m with you but I do believe it’s a federal law that you must be 11 to handle a firearm!!
I heard that when my son took his hunting course.

I don't believe so on the 11 yr old part JT. Alaska lists no minimum hunting age for kids, just says that kids under 10 hunting big game need to be under direct supervision of an adult. I'm thinking the 11 must be a state thing & someone misinformed you.

Jtcsrvbi, I have not heard anything yet. If you do please post it. I have a daughter that is itching to hunt with a pistol like her Dad. But this state is too strict with the handgun laws. 21 or else, as far as I know.

There is no such Federal regulation as that. There are supervision restrictions though, and states are far more regulating than the Feds when it comes to these things. In MN you can't hunt big game until 12, but I've seen TV shows where guys had their 6 yr old taking whitetail.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Pataki signed A-11864/S-2742A, provides an exemption for possession and use of a handgun at a range by persons 14-20. The law goes into effect immediately. It’s the first new pro-gun law in over a decade.

i found this on a blog.

http://www.assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=a11864

not sure she can hunt under this law but our club is changig there by-laws so they can shoot on the property and join the pistol league i shoot in.
