Curious to know what is the most common field rest you use for hunting? If there is more than one that is fine, but just wanting to know what most of you use?

Ernie, I have tried just about every thing on the market. I keep going back to my Harris bipods both bench model and the 25" model. If I am in a blind I use a sand bag for the grip . When not in a blind I have a cut down mono-pod for rear support. It just seems to work the best, this is what I plan on taking to WY this fall. The monopod also does double duty for my 15x56 swaros as well. I keep searching for something better but this is the sturdiest I have found so far. nmhunter

Ernie, Most of my hunting is for charlies. So I have a Harris bi-pod on the front and a 3" round sandbag with a short piece of 2X4 for the rear. The sandbag is filled with white rice, so you can squeeze it to adjust for elevation. I put a couple of clips on the sand bag and 2X4 so it carries easly clipped on a belt loop.

When sitting I use a set of homemade shooting sticks, made from cut-down shock-corded tent poles left over from a leaky tent. For standing an Explorer monopod does the trick, and makes for a nice walking stick too.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

when I am hunting from my tree stands. They both have a front rail that is padded and I use that as a rest, works very well. If I am hunting from the ground I normally find a small sapling that forms a Y and cut it to what I need. ( I always carry a small folding saw in my back pack) If I am going to be hiding in a bunch of bushes I try and find a spot with at least one branch that sticks out so I can use that as a rest. I have a collapsible shooting stick I got from dicks sporting goods that I take from time to time. The real things is to use your imagination, Look what is around you almost anything can be used for a field rest. just make sure it has some padding to keep your shots from stringing up

I prefer x-sticks, 4 footers seem to work the best for me. As I tend to carry a small folding stool more often than not. And if I know the ranges could be near my personal max, I use a second set under my wrist. Dave

for my deer hunting here.......i use my sling looped around my elbow for the most part. very steady, and is always on the gun n ready if a deer pops up from nowhere.......as is the case a lot of times. i've used it out to 150yrds. may sound short range to ya ernie.....but thats purrty long on deer in the east. for really long shots.....picnic tables, rocks, trees, knees.....or anything available at the time.
Kentucky….no place like home.

I made a set of X sticks from arrows and 3/8" gas line. They are light and work good. I have not used them much,1 deer and 1 charlie. Deer hunting is close in my area and off hand shots are the norm.

For short range...anything from offhand (I practice this a LOT) to the side of a tree and just this last year I started using the Stoney Point Polecat Tripod.
For longer range and prone shooting when available (w/ a bolt action SSP)I'll use the Harris bipod with a small gear pouch as my rear rest. For longer shooting with a break action I'll use a backpack over a stump, tree limb, rock, etc.

I have used a Storey Point Pole Cat very successfully on moose. I find it very handy and was able to practice out to 150 yards at our range. The only other rest I have used was a backpack. Shot an antelope as well as a number of prairie dogs using that system.

My preferred field rest is the Harris Bipod (swivel series with the pod-loc added). the closer I get to the ground the better. I also shoot over a pack or any other object that is sturdy. I carry shooting sticks in conjunction with the bi-pod and use them when needed.
