OK fellas...how about some postal match ideas. Do you want to shoot for points, groups, or what?? Depending on what we decide to do will determine the target to use. The match last summer we shot for groups went pretty well with a lot of shooters participating. The shoot for score only had two shooters but it was held late in the year when most were thinking about hunting season. So maybe we'll try another shoot for score. Just some ideas.
Post your thoughts and ideas here. When we figure out what we are going to do then we'll determine an ending date.

hmmmmmmmmm uhhhhhh....maybe last years first group shoot bout killed me, and hardly any shooters for the second one for scores. i got a couple ideas either 3 shot groups for the tightest group. save on time and ammo or........ how about shooting scoring targets from the bench, and make it about 15-40 shots, possibly on multiple targets for total score. this one would be easy to add score without tedious group measuring, and give several shots to make a higher total score. maybe 200-400 points possible. just some ideas........maybe we can get a bunch o people to shoot on that second idea, and with that many shots, hardly anyone will want to keep shootin till they get a perfect score. shoot one time and mail em. win, lose, or draw i'll cheerlead dan april-june? maybe

Just a basic idea, but since this is a hunters forum, how about a specific size target(ex., 10" paper plates) at various ranges with a hit or miss scoring system. Have classes, (scoped revolver, unscoped revolver, & specialty pistol?). Each would shoot out to "appropriate" ranges. Say 75 yds for iron sights, 100 yds for scoped revolver, & 200 or 300 yds for specialty pistol. For scoped revolvers you could do 5 shots @ 50 yds, 5 shots @ 75 yds, & 5 @ 100yds(all just examples. Maybe no rest other than your body(elbow resting on knee), no creedmore or prone just to keep it interesting. Don't often get to use those positions in real world hunting due to brush.). It's hit or miss with each shot being worth 10 points. Just a thought. Easy to score, & relevant to hunting where kill shots & not groups are what's important. Vance in AK.

How about something like this Varmint Target . It is a downloadable target so everyone would have access to it. You could score it as the inner scoring ring being a 10 and the outter scoring ring being a 6. Use inward scoring so that if the bullet touches the next higher scoring ring it receives the higher point value. They could be used as is for Centerfire and downsized 50% for Rimfire (if possible). I just found this one quick, and I am sure there are other downloadable targets available. Like has been stated this is a Handgun Hunting Site, and since it is gettin on to Varmint Time, this target would probably be apporpriate. Now with all of that said, if'n you're gonna do this thing with Rimfires, COUNT ME IN. I just happen to have a new Rimfire Handgun I'm itchin to try out and another one on the way. After my brother passed away I purchased his Ruger SS 5 1/2" Bull Barrel Ruger MKII complete with an Illusion Red Dot Electronic Sight. I/ve been playing with it a little, but have a few accessories aquired to add to it (Volquartset Target Grips, Volquartsen Extended Bolt Release, CLark Custom Guns Custom Trigger, Weigand Scope Base, and a On Target Guns Blast Shield. In addition to these parts / accessories I am also going to drill and tap the frame for a Trigger PRE-Travel Adjustment Screw. The other is a SS Super 14 Match Grade .22 LR Contender Barrel. Naturally included with the SS Barrel is a SS Contender Frame and a 3x12x Burris LER Fine Plex - PA Handgun Scope with Target Turrets. Yep it may take me a little while to get everything ready, but if'n you're gonna include my FAVORITE Handgun Cartridge, the .22 LR, count me in. Larry

I will give it try. It should be fun.
I don't have any where to shoot over 100 yards,so that would be my limit.
keeping in tune with handgun hunting, I would rec that the targets be large enough to shot using a 2x scope at what ever distence is chosen. No flys at 100 yards.

All good recommendations. We'll go with more of a hunter style match...no small targets and no shooting for groups. If anyone has target ideas available on the web then post a link for all to see and we'll make a decision. The max range will be 100yds (scoped specialty pistols and scoped revolvers).
Then do you want 25yds or 50yds for rimfires and iron sighted handguns??
The target linked to is just one I found that may work well for a points style shoot and looks like will be visible with lower mag optics.
Match Target
Let me know what you think...the center red circle would be 10pts, solid black could be 7pts, then five pts and three points.

Sounds good Dan. I will be shooting a scoped .22 and my 44 mag SBH, factory sights. You know I will send targets no matter what and I won't be embarresed if I can't get a round on the paper. It will be good practice for me. You know I am always looking for good hunting practice. Sounds like most of us are.

Dan, I too, am limited to 100 yds right now. Always need an excuse to get out and burn powder! I agree with Chief RID, time has taught me to not be embarrased of my targets......or I would have quit shooting years ago! Cheers, Dave

good lookin target to me Dan. only thing, if i may suggest making the scoring rings = 100pts(center hit), 50 points(in the black), 20 points, 10 points, 5 points(on white paper). this may allow a greater total point spread. a man hitting that little red section needs more than 10 points! let's get our moneys worth!

I like the target. The distances sound good to me. I have a couple of handguns I could try this with. When are we going to start this?

What guidelines do you want to use for a rest...will we bench shoot or field style rest?? Remember...being the first of the year we may all need a little bench time to get back in the groove. Later in the summer we could do the same target and ranges but from a field style rest to see what happens to the scores!! Once we decide on this I'll post a sticky note with all the info combined and set a deadline.

Sounds good! How about scoped centerfires at 100 yards. Scoped rimfires at 50 yards. Iron sites (centerfire or rimfire) at 25 yards. I think Larry in SD should be handicapped to 200 yards with his 14" 22LR. We all know what he is capable of.

teleplayer's distances sound fine but as a revolver shooter with a red dot sight I'm sure I can't be competetive with a XP or Contender with the same or a scope at equeal distances. Will their be a revolver/auto centerfire class & specialty pistol centerfire class with the scopes, or just a single scoped centerfire class? Vance

Hey guys come on now. This is going to be a totally new to me barrel, with no ammo testing done. Geez a guy shoots a couple good groups with a barrel he no longer owns and is branded for life.
Oh well, maybe I had that one comin. If that's the case, KYODE I ain't gonna tell you any more when I find some super shootin .22 LR Ammo that just happens to shoot good in about every gun I have ever tested it in. Ooops, I think I already did that last year.

I like teleplayer's ranges also. 100 yards centerfire, 50 yards scoped revolver and rimfire, and 25 yards open sight anything. Off of the bench would be fine with me.

hehe, you still don't have to worry about me larry. i could use your most accurate ammo, and still not compete. seriously, i vote 50 yards on the 22lr's with scopes. i wanna see larry's 50 yard shooting. the boy can shoot, and i just gotta see him at longer range. yep, larry you're branded for life, but consider it a compliment. come to think of it ol Danb has got 2 options also. keep the .222 in the safe, or shoot from........oh.... about 400 yards. hehehe. ahhhh ferget that to, he'll just pull another rabbit outta the hat. i'm sure he's got another accurate barrel hidden in that big ol pile. hehe, this is already gettin fun........and we ain't even started yet!

Be nice now KYODE, I don't even have the Frame, Barrel or Scope YET. However I did get an e-mail from Florida this evening telling me the money order and my dealers FFL arrived and the Frame has been sent. Hopefully next week everything will start showing up. Then it'll be some serious accuracy testing getting ready to TRY to shoot a decent group or two at 50 yards.
I already have some USBR Bench Rest Targets on hand, so it should be a fun summer of shooting Rimfire Bench Rest. Who knows I may even give the Ruger MKII a try provided I ever get all of the accessories installed and the Hammer / Sear tuned up.

PS, My FIRST weekend back at work FULL TIME. Man am I tired, and I only have 3 1/2 hours to go till it is bed time.

hmmmmmm.......don't know? i kinnda liked the 10 shot per target idea. reckon you'll be able to count all 10 shots, since some may group tight?
i was just teasin the "dude". can't tell from the pic for sure
your call dan
what do you other fellers think?
maybe 5 shots, 4 targets = 20 shots per gun since we can copy them on a copy machine with gray centers, you would not have to print so many from the puter.
