John, the speeds you get with out leading will for the most part depend on the diameter of the CB's you have. The first thing to make sure of is that the CB is larger than your bore by at least.001-.003 . If gases get sround to the sides you are just plain going to have problems before you get started. Bullet type fishing weights are soft enough to slug a bore. I slug from the chamber end and the muzzle. IMHO the CB should be sized to the larger of the two measurments.
If the CB is of appropriate size you should be good to go.
If all goes well you should not get any leading at all as you go up the scale. That is a big discussion in most circles which fails first, the alloy or the lube.
Oh, before I forget to mention, get all of ALL of the jacket material out. I can't stress this enough. I prefer wipe out, then some Barnes for good measure than some Kroil.
If you are wanting to switch from CB's to jacketed back and forth, just keep the bore clean. CB's WILL let you know if it isn't.
I will take a SWAG at speeds, you should reach speeds with the CB's about 1-11/2 grains less than jacketed bullets need to get there. I am having good luck with AA #9 in the 44.
If you have problems or questions and I can help give a holler. I just started fooling with the 44's in my 10 5/8 S&W 29. It was a safe queen for the last several years. After playing with it a couple of weekends in a row, I remebered why, revolters are some grip sensitive buggers.
I have been playing with CB's for the last couple of years in a variety of calibers and guns. CB' have performed very well for everything I have asked of them thus far. I have not crowded the upper limits on the velocity side, but a shooting buddy of mine has. He has been fooling around with the 35 Whelan and a 375JDJ carbine barrel with very good reults. The Whelan is awazing, rifle sorry, but none the less 5 of the 204+ grainers under 1" at 100M running around 2K+. The 375 JDJ with a 264 grain bullets is just a tad under a factory load and shoots as good in not a bit better, still nasty recoil IMHO. I forget the speed on that one.
