Saw this on another board and thought I'd pass it along. The 460 S&W in the performance center version is being recalled.

Caught that as well, doesn't say why though!

Rod, too.

I have the standard 460 and it had a misfire problem as did my 500, I finally figured out that the hammer hits the side plate and smith and wesson clearanced the plate on the 500 when I sent it back the first time. I also had it in the first time because the fixed brake which is also the barrel nut came loose which is also why it was back in less than a year later but this time I raised enough crap that they put the new style barrel on it with the removeable brake. I heard from a smith and wesson rep a while back that they were having alot of problems because these guns (the X frames) were rushed into production and because of demand quality control suffered.

this is kind of off the 460 again but I thought you guys might find it interesting, as I stated in my previous post my 500 has been into smith twice in the last year and I just got it back with a new barrel on it, now it is shooting great with super accuracy but now it is misfiring again. I did some cleaning on it and I am going to try it again tomorrow but I'm really starting to question the quality of these guns, something else I never noticed before is that while dry firing the firing pin was sparking, anyone ever noticed anything like that before?

I share your concerns. I have a .500 Performance Center that was sent in because the hammer was hanging up in mid travel. I got it to work half way decent by oiling it but I decided to send it to S&W. To my recollection I was not given sufficient info as to what S&W did to it but it works okay now. I still can get the hammer to hang up if I hold it back with my thumb as I pull the trigger and then gently let it go forward. I have had four 500's to this point and I could get any of them to hang up this way. My .460 does the same thing. Anyway, I would expect better quality from the Performance Center versions.

always heard "you get what you pay for"but at $1200.00 a pop you would think the gun would at least work half way i really hope they get their stuff straight...winchester is probably getting lonely in japan or wherever they are now ...jim257

Recoil, my 460 and 500 are the same, I took the side plate off and polished it with a diamond hone and I also polished the side of the hammer, the 460 has been behaving but I have to take the 500 back out and see what happens. I think what bugs me the most is that these guns are marketed as the ticket for dangerous game hunting or back up but I don't think I'd like to here "click" while being charged by a mad grizz or black bear. Slavage have you thought about the 460 in a BFR, if I had to do again my 500 and 460 would both be BFRs' but I think I'm going to either pick up a 500WE from FA or have a 500 linebaugh or maybe a 500 max built when the funds are there, for now I'm relying heavily on my Reeder 475s. Actually a good case and point would be the run in I had with that cougar, I may not have got him but if I had the 500 instead of the 475 and got a click instead of a boom I might have been kitty chow.

I am not totally convinced at this point that they did indeed permanently fix the problem with my .500 Performance Center S&W. I would not be surprised if it locked up again in the future. The sad part is that they would most likely deny that this is a problem with the X-frame if they were confronted with the issue. I sure do like my .500 and my .460 however.

I spoke with Smith yesterday and was informed that they are only taking user information at this time. They haven't deceided what course of action to take at this time. He said they will be putting out a mailing to owners when a repair order is given.

He would not give any details as to what they're looking for. I tried to pry some info but he wasn't giving any details.

I haven't experienced any issues with either of my 460's. Both are fine shooters. The recall is only on the PC guns not the standard production.

I've heard rumor that there were a couple guns shoot the comps loose though I can't substantiate what I've heard.

I'm not fond of the look of the long cylinder BFR. I wish that they had a mid sized cylinder version. I have the .475 Linebaugh version and it looks great.

I'm not sure I would want a BFR in 500 or 460. I shot a BFR in 500 with factory grips and no porting with 440gr cast and a stiff load. One word... BRUTAL! Then the same day I shot an 8 3/8" S&W with almost the same load. Very pleasant to shoot.

The Smith has a lot going for it over the BFR to tame recoil, heavier gun, better factory grip material, better grip angle (double action grip over single action grip shape) IMHO, built in break, and proper cylinder lenght. Both guns are about the same money, so by the time you add porting and better grips you have more into the BFR and I doubt the recoil would be the same or less than the Smith when you are done.

I'm new to all of this handgun stuff, but I love my standard 460 83/4". It kicks a little but it sure is accurate.

Don't get me wrong, my 460 and 500 are both super accurate and pussy cats to shoot compared to my 475s' but both of my guns have had misfire problems and apparently I'm not the only one, my point on the bfr's is that I believe the machine work is higher quality, which if you look at and handle the bfr and x frame side by side is obvious. I had a bfr in 45-70 and the gun functioned flawlessly and was extremely accurate, it does recoil differently than the x frames because of the single action grip but you get used to it pretty quickly.
