For the first time I'm going to do all of my big game hunting with a revolver this year. But I'm also going to carry my 300 ultra mag just in case a trophy presents itself at very long range. Any suggestions on what type or brand of shooting sticks would work well with a revolver and rifle? I will be shooting from standing or sitting positions only.

Thanks Bryan

The Explorer Monopod colapses short enough to use sitting and plenty long to use standing, makes a great walking stick as well. JMO, Rod.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I use the pole cat collapsable tripod for everything from my 17hmr revolver to my 458 Lott rifle, since it is collapsable it works for sitting and standing.

Stoney Point Shooting Sticks have been my choice the last 6-7 years.

Picked up the stoney point mono pod. Seemed like the mono had more ease of movement should I have to turn to follow an animal.

check out varmint al.com, made a set of sticks like he shows, they work for me, and leave that 300UM home. I parked my 1100(we didn't used to be allowed to use rifles in upstate NY) in 1989 and have shot more deer and had more fun since I started hunting exclusively with hand guns. Sometimes I cary a revolver and a contender, sometimes only one or the other. But once I left my long gun behind, I found it much easier to hunt in a style and manner that made handgun hunting successful. Good luck

What length??? I just bought the stoney point pole cats at GM, they seem way too short, am I missing something? I think I am going to return them for the longer ones, I can't seem to use these, unless I am kneeling, even then, I have to scooth my neck down. What sizes are you all using? Thanks!! I would like to use them seated on my small folding seat or standing maybe even... Ideas???

stoney point makes 3 different lengths of the "polecat" monopod.
navigator 21"-62"
explorer 25"-62"
expedition 35"-65"

i think you meant to say you bought the "steady stix" because they are the ones that are shorter like you describe. if you're looking for something like you have only longer, then stoney point makes the "safari stix" which are designed for standing shots. the only thing is that they are 72" open so you may have to angle them in front of you for seated shots.
or you may want to look at their bipods. they telescope instead of fold and are available in 3 different lengths. and you can get a belt pouch or shoulder strap to carry them. the only downside is they're slower to get "up" quickly compared to the safari stix, but they're my favorite by far.

I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a handgun today.

Actually, I got ones called "Field Stix" they go to 38"... I think I may go the monopod route, seems like more flexibility for height...

I use a adjustable mono type (not sure brand?) that I got at Dicks --it works nice for me and used as a hiking stick and spider-web-smasher as well.

I made up a few sets of shooting sticks using some plant stakes from the garden dept. at Home Depot. They come in various lengths, and are made of a green plastic with a metal inner core for support. Use elastic shock cord (or rubber O rings)to bind the sticks together about 8-10" from the top, and get some 3/8 ID vinyl tubing from the HD plumbing dept to keep the sticks from marring your gun. Cheap, quiet and lightweight. If you don't like them, you can always use the sticks to hold up your tomatoes.

Does anyone use shooting sticks from a treestand? I have a Summit climber with no shooting rail. I am not sure of the model, I bought it from a guy a couple of years ago. I love the stand, but I am trying to figure out what I can use for a shooting stick. Do all the monopoles have a spike on the bottom? I was thinking I could support the bottom on my boot, but if the stick is like a skee pole that might get painful
Just wondering what you all use out of a treestand??

I could not seem to get comfortable with the field stix and the shooting stix. (not tall enough??! I went the Stoney Point monopod route as well, now I just need to give it some camo paint!! (I am having a deja vu, I feel like I posted this already!!) Mike B
