Last spring I purchased a used 10" .357 Herrett barrel for my contender and have been shooting it all summer. I like the round and also like the heritage that goes along with the round. I remember reading about it years ago, along witht the .30 Herrett. Does anybody still use this round? It is very accurate, but I have a question. I have only ever seen it in the tapered 10" barrel, what would happen to the round out of a 12" barrel?
It may sound weird, but I would rather have a 12-14" heavy barrel ported. The recoild is not bad at all, I can shot it all day with no problem, I just like the heavier barrel.
I was thinking of selling it and ordering a 12" heavy barrel from SSK....

See if this link works for you.

http://www.loaddata.com/members/search_detail.cfm?metallicid=1861&MW=&PM=&PT=

It's from Load data . com. It's from Harnady & is with a 12" barrel & is the only .357 Herrett data they have listed.
Hope it helps.

I have a thing for the .357 and .30 Herrett's too. I like em' both. I used the 30 herrett to take an antelope just last year. If I get time to get it sighted in I'll be using the 357 Herrett for antelope this year. Mine is a 10" too. Easy to carry and nice to shoot. Heck I just might get it up and running for this Sat's deer opener!

I, like you, really enjoy them both. I have a 10" 30 and a 14" 357. I use my 30 on coyotes and lions (no lion yet however). Nosler 125s dump coyotes like bombs. How many of us grew up reading about Bob Milek and Steve Herrett hunting with these. Heck, that is how I got started hunting with a handgun. I love shooting Hornady's 180 gr. SSP in the 357. I really like the 357 in a 14" for the velocity. It's killing me not being able to hunt this year.

exactly! I like those rounds, for the same reason i drive a 1990 Range Rover... they are are all classics! Reading Herrett and Milek got me to go buy my first Contender, a very old .30-30 10" barrel. I have since added numerous barrels, but still love the classics. How does the 14" .357 do? Is it ported? I personally like the balance of the 14" barrels better.
On another note, why can't you hunt this year? I was almost in the same boat... new job... but I ended up planning a trip to my friend's farm in Nothern Ontario. It's not with a handgun, but at least I will be out in the woods in November. I am planning a trip out west next year and can not wait!!!

I have both herrets my 357 herrett will out shoot the 30 herrett.I think the herrets were designed for a 10" barrel but I have seen a lot of longer barrels.I bought both herrets for the history but I really like the 357 its accurate and plenty of knock down.

My .357 Herrett is a 15" Custom Shop tube...shoots very well and recoil is minimal. I load it with H4227 and Hornady 180gr SSPB's.

Andy, I use both Herrett's in 10" Bull Contenders and love them! I know DanB has a lot of experience as favorites too. I shoot a 125 NBT from the 30 and I like either 140 Speer and 170 Sierra JHC in the 357. Both kill deer nicely and chucks with authority. I've never taken any real big deer though but wouldn't be afraid to try a muley inside of 150 yards.

That's what i was thinking for a Mulie. I am going to clean out the safe and will make room for another .357 Herrett barrel. I think i will be selling a 12" .223 barrel, a old 10' .30-30 barrel, and new 14" .44 amg hunter barrel and the old .357 Herret barrel that I have. I figure that I have the .223, .44 mag, and the .30-30 in 4-5 years, so why keep them?? Now I can get something new
So if anyone is interested, I will be posting to the barrel classified page later today.
