that is the question...."
I can't decide whether or not to put a scope on my 480 ruger super redhawk. 9-1/2" barrel.

I had a 2x Burris on it until this morning, when the reticle broke. Beside the fact that this scope didnt last, isn't the reason for the question.

The question has to do with the maximum effective range and the group size at that range. The other guns I own are xp-100's and contenders, which have spoiled me at 100yds. This revolver doesnt seem to shoot accurately at that 100 yd distance.

This is the first revolver I have loaded for and tried to shoot at 100yds.

I am expecting too much for a revolver at 100yds? It shoots alright at 50yds with a scope with factory ammo.

what range do you have your revolvers set-up for and what scope....if any...do you use?
Thank you in advance for you input.

Bill

I used to have the 44mag version of that pistol. With open sights I regularly popped oil cans at 100yds offhand for unbelieving rifle shooters. The more $$ the more often the hits came.

These days, I'd stick a 1.5 - 2.5 power scope on it. Preferably, one with a red light on the reticle. The extra shooting time is soooooo nice.

I'd expect, no, demand 150+yd groups usable on deer. All of my 44mags (4" - 9.5") have been good enough for 150yd shots from a solid rest. Thats Ruger, Colt, and S&W models.

I have a 4X Leuplod on my 9.5" 480 SRH. For the most part I can put all six shots into a 6-7" group at 100 yards. I'm sure someone thats a better shot than I could have smaller groups. Thats with the 325gr XTP. I tried the 275gr Speer gold dots. Accuracy was not as good. I have shot a few of the 400gr XTP's, they seem to shoot even better that the 325's. I'm going to do more load development with the 400's. I have mine sighted 1" high at 50 yards. Thats about the average shot where I hunt.

What bullet are you using?

Dale,

I'm using the same bullets, 275..325..400. Two different powders, H110 and 296. I will keep trying loads. I shot about the same at 100yds as you. Maybe it's a 50yd gun.
Thanks Bill

I'm going elk and deer hunting this next week in Colorado and my BFR .475 Linebaugh will be my weapon of choice. I have a 2.5-8X Leupold on it and last time I had it out I was getting 3-4" groups at 100 meters. If I get a good rest on my tripod I'll go 200 yards with it. A .475 Linebaugh is just a .480 Ruger on steroids right?

I have the 44Mag 9.5inch. I use a Bushnell Holosight on mine and love it. Unlimited Eye relief and field of view are tremendous! I've sighted mine in up to 50 yards with very nice groups but did try at 75 yards with good results as well. I started with a Bushnell pistol scope (the model below the Bausch& L) on this gun but field of view and eye relief was unacceptable to my liking (don't like hunting while looking through a "Key Hole.") If I did not use the Holosight I would opt for open sites. Do you really plan on shooting something out to 100yards? If I look back at all my shots hunting in NY, PA and NC I truly cannot think of a shot I’ve taken that far (even with My 30-06)? Anyway, hope this helps and enjoy that 480 Ruger I hear they are a nice caliber and like that Target Grey Color.
Cheers and TGIF !!!!!!!!!!!

You don't say what your group sizes are at 100 but a 3" group from a revolver at 100 yards is not too bad. I was testing some loads yesterday and all of the 350 grain jhp's were grouping 4-6 inches until I got the velocity up to about 1450 fps. Then they shrunk to around 2.5 inches. The 400 grain loads did the same thing until the velocity got to around 1300 fps. Be sure you run 2 or 3 different bullets up to within 100 fps or so of the expected maximum. (of course never go over the published max loads)

no I'm not planning to shoot 100yds with this pistol. I just was curious what other people were doing. I tried factory loads at 25 and 50 with another 5x burris I had with very good results. From this, I known my reloading will have potential. But when I shot the factory/new scope combo at 100yds....not so good about 7"!!!! I just didnt want to be searching for a load at 100yds when the gun/scope/load....and most importantly the SHOOTER can only do "pie-plate" accuracy there. I'd like to shoot better than that, but if it's not to be, I'll set it up for the best accuracy distance. If that means 50 yds or so maybe I don't need a scope.

Last time I checked deer and Elk are bigger than a "pie-plate" Don't get tied-up on accuracy for a hunting handgun...As long as you can keep all your shots on a paper plate @ 100 yards your going to kill alot of game.

The vitals aren't much bigger than a paper plate. If all you can hit is a paper plate you are limited to shots where you can aim for the center of the plate. OTOH, if you can hit a baseball many more shots are available.

I just got my 'One Ragged Hole' rear peep set and Marble's fiber optic front sight installed on my .41 SBH Bisley Hunter and I must say I'm impressed so far. Haven't had the chance to shoot it yet but I really like the sight picture. I'll report on performance once I get a chance. You can also get this combo for the Redhawks, Super's, G-P's that use the dovetailed front sight. From what I've read you can expect good things, just another option, Rod.

Rod, too.
