been using a 4x12 simmons rifle scope on my 14" .223 contender for a while now. i had to tame the recoil just a tad for it to work with this setup. i'm using a nosler 40gr bt, pushed by blue dot powder. chronys around 3100fps at 13.5gr of blue dot, and will shoot 5 shot 1" groups.
i first tried this as an experiment, and couldn't put out the extra funds for a more expensive handgun scope at the time. just had the rifle scope sitting there, and heard people talk of using that type of setup, so i figured i'd try it out.
with normal .223 loads, i whacked myself in the nose a couple times. then larryinsd turned me on to the blue dot loads, and i had also seen them mentioned by others. the blue dot in the .223 works great, as muzzle blast, and recoil are greatly reduced.(not reduced pressure)
after using the gun from the bench, and packing it on a field outing, and testing from field positions, i've decided to keep the riflescope mounted indefinately. i like it, and it works great for me. i'd say it's not for everyone, but well worth a try on the light recoiling guns. especially if you have that oddball scope just layin around.
jim257, i bet it'd work great on that 22hornet. try her out, and let us know how ya like it. the leupold may be more forgiving in eye relief, and make the task even easier.
actually, i have 2 setups with the riflescope. my 14" 22lr match barrel has a BSA 4x16x40 riflescope mounted. i like this setup as well.
