Welcome aboard. I don't have any loads for the .44 but others do, Vance is a big .44 guy. If you want to occupy your time this topic has come up several times previous and if you click through the old page list you'll come across some info. Merry X-Mas.
Rod, too.

It will be easier if you click on the search feature in the gray link bar at the top of the page and you can also search the load database in Services -> Members Only.

Welcome to the forum & Merry Christmas Bill!!!! I do enjoy the .44 mag. Most of the time I put around 21.5 grains of H-110 behind a 300-320 hardcast bullet (about 1350 fps from my Mod. 29 S&W. Start lower & work up as always). For your application I think I might consider an expanding bullet of some type. If you go with he hardcast go for bone!!!!! Was the Ruger a Christmas gift per chance?

Here is a good example of a heavy crimp. It serves 2 purposes in better ignition and keeping bullets from jumping under heavy recoil and binding up the gun. You have to be a little careful and not buckle the case. You'll also want to seat and crimp in two separate steps.

If you're going to use a turret press then you'll need a separate crimp die to avoid having to seat and crimp in the same step. Check out the Redding profile crimp die.

Gary's crimp looks better than mine, but I will say I've never had a bullet walk in mine. I use Lee dies & seat & crimp in one operation. I may buy a Lee "factory crimp die" someday, but haven't really seen the need yet.

Not really because it depends on the bullet being used. Not all crimp grooves are in the same place. You just have to fiddle with the depth of the crimp die it a little until it looks right. Note that a crimp on a lead bullet will look different than the one I posted.

I just went to wal mrt and bought a box on remington 180 gr. JSP ammo and look at it. The crimp is at .453 it does not have a heavy crimp. I am use to not putting heavy crimp on a bullet. I know in rifle there is not much at all. won't that much crimp be bad for accuracy? Thanks Bill

An old codger named Elmer once opined a 250gr hard cast Lyman 429421 over 20+gr of 2400 would do wonders on whitetail, elk, moose, and hogs. He was right. Aim for the vitals and get your critter. The deer here are so small I've about decided to switch to 180/200gr JHP's, but, the Keith bullets shoot so well in all the 44's I've had (2 Rugers, 1 S&W, & 1 Colt revolvers & a Rossi carbine - haven't tried the 2 new Rugers yet) I'm hesitant to switch. I shoot 20gr and it's easy on the wrists, pistol, and accurate while being hard on the critters.
FWIW, about 1.2 metric butt tons of whitetails from Michigan and Tn have been shot by my family with Remington/Federal/Winchester factory 240gr JHP's.

Where the heavy crimp really becomes important is when using heavy bullets. The recoil can cause the bullets in the unfired rounds to work out of the case. With lighter bullets you can get away with less crimp but not too much so.
Actually with many powders the heavy crimp provides more consistent accuracy due to more consistent ignition.
