General question for you Striker guys: Can a Model 12 barrel be used to rebarrel a Striker? Your help is appreciated.

You betcha! The model 12's had the 26" varmint taper. They work great...I like them cut back to 16-ish inches. The only barrels that will not fit are the older (much older) Savages with much smaller barrel shanks and a few rifles that were built in WSM chamberings that had 1.150" shanks. Most barrels will have the 1.050" threads.

Thanks, Dan. I was hoping you would be here this evening. I found a 22-250 barrel to put on the Striker I got last week. Now...I know I'll need to get a gunsmith to take the other barrel off. I think I can put the new (used) barrel back on, I got a wrench a while back, did you set the barrel nut to a certain weight setting when you set the chamber? Use go/no go gages? I have an older gentleman thats helped me for years with my 1911's that used to build tactical rifles for the FBI. I think he will be able to give me a hand with this project. Thanks for the help.

G/NG gages is certainly the best way to do it but using a sized case is pretty much the norm among Savage barrel swappers. I just slide a sized case into the bolt head and close the bolt with the barrel installed about half way. Then I turn the barrel in until it contacts the case and run the nut down snug by hand. Then I insert a fired case in the bolt and chamber it...the bolt should close snug on that case. Reinsert the sized case and close the bolt, tighten the wrench in a standard bench vise, slide the barrel through the wrench and twist the action and barrel in the same direction to tighten the nut w/o changing the headspace.

I've used this method on three different guns and have at least four firings on the brass from each gun. If the headspace were off (too loose), the cases would cetainly have shown signs of seperation by now. When sizing, I neck size with just a light bump on the shoulder so the bolt closes easily.

So, if I understand this right you don't need to torque the barrel nut, just a firm hand tight. Thanks for the help!

I get it as tight as I possibly can. Two "jar lid grippy things" (you know...those flat, round rubber disks) work great for gripping the action and barrel two when tighting things up. I'm also 235# and 6' so I can lean on them pretty hard and get it good and tight.

Ok, Thanks for the help. I, too, am 6' 230#, a little over my playing weight, but I can put a little oommph into it! ha! Now I just need to get that barrel here. Dan, thanks for the help.

This is the 22-250 Striker I'm going to rebarrel:

If the deal works out it will be the varmint barrel off of a Model 12.

Just made the deal on the 22-250 barrel off the Model 12. Should have it in a week or so. Then the fun begins!!
