Dan B, I think you mentioned this once. Has anybody used the 250 Savage in an XP in standard or AI cartridge? I sure would like to have some feedback. Thanks.

I just got a Encore barrel from MGM in 250 Savage and working up the loads for it. So far I'm running around 2750 fps with a 100 gr bullet out of a 14" tube. It's grouping about 1 to 1 1/2". hope that will help ya. Richard..

I think "xphunter" has some type of handgun in the .250 Savage Improved.

It is a very nice cartridge but a "lil" on the small side for deer hunting in my area. With hunting pressure, the round MUST be able to do the textbook description of "bang-flop" from any shot angle or another hunter may take it. Granted, I've not had many run any more than 50yds (or 10yds) for that matter when harvested with a handgun but I've been fortunate to make good shots.......and use BIG bullets at BIG velocities.

If you did not have much pressure to worry about or were a serious varmint (coyote or javelina size) hunter then I think it would be great.

I tend to agree, 6.5mm is the smallest I consider to be a "respectable" deer round. Many will disagree but oh well that's me. I like 120+ grain bullets, 150's to 165's in 30 cal for B-C as well as energy.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

The guy that sold me my first XP had one in 250 Sav Imp. He swore by it but I never saw or heard of anything he killed with it.

I left a note over on SP on a similar post. I thought I remembered someone having one on an XP but couldn't remember who it was. I have 30 caliber(30 Herrett & 30 Bellm in the TC's), and 7mm (7mm08 and maybe 7BR, deal in progress for a take off barrel) covered. Just was thinking about the 25's to get some ideas about what might be out there. Thanks for the info!

John,
I wouldn't hesitate to use a 250 Savage on deer. Bob Milek used his 250 Sav., and took mulies, whitetail and antelope with it to about 250 yards or so with the 100 grain NBT's or possibly SB's.
I have a 250 Sav. AI and push a 100 NBT @ 2850+ and don't feel undergunnned at all out to 300 yards.
Even the 6's do a good job, as my daughter shot a buck last year @ 350 yards with my 6-284 XP (1-shot/1-Kill) and I would use it out to 500 yards with complete confidence in good conditions.
Kansas deer are not small like South Texas, but may not be as big as deer in other states.
Yesterday, my daughter killed a doe at 340ish-350ish with "Puff" and the animal still went 70 yards with her lungs blown out (great shot placement). Bang Flops are more common when taking out both shoulders are taking out the central nervous system.
When using the right bullet in an accurate load-Dead is dead, when you properly place the bullet.
