Kyle, just read about a house bill being presented, HB 204,
asking for a 4" minimum barrel length on handguns ( no problem here). BUT also a .30 caliber MINIMUM for deer, elk and bear. ( i didn't know we had a bear season in KY). the 30 cal minimum is a bit scary, that would affect some of us hangunners there, Have you read or heard anything about this., I saw it on the KY hunting forum. thought you might like to know this

Wow! 30 caliber as a minimum bore diameter is kind of harsh. Here in Nebraska our only requirement is the handgun must generate 400 ft/lbs of energy at 50 yards.

I hunted in Wyoming a few years back. There requirement was any cartridge with a bore diameter .240 or larger and a cartridge OAL of 2.0 inches with the bullet seated to a normal depth. Otherwise if the cartridge was shorter than 2.0 inches it had to be 35 caliber or larger.

That sounds like NY when I first moved here. Nothing less than 35 caliber could be used in a handgun for deer. Now they have changed the law to include any centerfire cartridge at least 22 caliber and a at least a 4 inch barrel. Sounds like NY is becoming more progressive as some states are becoming more restrictive.

hadn't heard that....but don't like the idea

that means a 7-08, and a host of others would not be legal....n that is definately not smart

Great, in their infinite wisdom, they've outlawed the .357 Magnum for dear and made the new minimum the .30 Carbine. In the process any rifle round from .243 to .280 Remington will now be verbotten in a pistol. Ever notice that the people who make laws are never the ones who have to live with them?

Come on now guys.

Don't you think this is something ole Kyle came up to increase sales of .30-30 AI Barrels-n-Dies ?

I gotta admit it's not a half bad idea there Kyle.

Seriously I really don't see how that would ever pass, but then a lot of our Lawmakers have no idea as to what Hunting with a Handgun is all about.

That's one of the problems we face. Most of the otherworlders think a handgun is a Glock or the like. If they saw what we use for our purposes they'd lose it.

One of the dumbest restrictions has got to be the "straight wall only" rule in some areas without any restriction to max length. The spirit of the rule is to restrict range, but they don't realize that some of us are packin' straight wallers the size of their mi'l finner.

The unclued are the ones to be worried of............!

I can't believe that neighboring Minnesota hasn't changed their laws yet (not that I want them to mind you). In certain areas they only allow either shotgun slugs or muzzleloaders. However in those same areas you can use a Speciality Pistol in any caliber / cartridge they are offered in.

Yeah, Larry, I don't understand it either. Like I say, it is the ones who don't know that you should worry about. Here you can use any legal handgun in a shotgun/slug zone, regardless of caliber. It defies the spirit of the law. But most layfolks don't think 7-30 Waters or 45/70 when they think handguns. Same way that stats get piled together when it comes to gun related deaths, they don't diferentiate between good and bad guys. Just watch your backs, brothers!

You guys had better keep an eye on the law makers. We were pretty successful fighting the Elk issue several months back it will take the same kind of effort to beat this down. Let them hear from you...

Sorry guys, been out fer a while, saw this post and thought you might be interested to know that an acquaintance was one of the fellows that compiled the bulk of the information for the original NY handgun hunting law and they only changed his words slightly.... He said the energy equivalent of a 357 Magnum.... they wrote 357 caliber.... at the time it seemed like a moot point, to them... worked out for me that's when my wife ponied up and bought me a 35 Rem. since I couldn't use the TC in 30-30 or 7TCU. point is that you have to be there when these decisions are being made, or live with them, and that's what adds value to forums like this. just my 2c

I checked on this on Legislative Bill Watch and HB-204 has been withdrawn. This was a STUPID proposal and the lawmaker that introduced it is definitely uninformed about handgun calibers.

thanks for the update, glad it was thrown out, it was just way to limiting for us handgunners.
