Has any one chronographed factory ammo out of pistol length barrels? If you have, please list load and barrel length. TIA

break open or other?
Ernie -
Just curious - what would be different based on action type? Would factory ammo perform differently out of one compared to the other? Thanks.

Boy, do I feel silly. I misread the post
No, there is no difference. I was thinking he wanted to know what could be achieved with a 7mm Rem Mag handgun and asked which type becasue you can't push "Reloads" as hard in a break open compared to a falling block or bolt.
I have never chroned a 7RM at all, so I can't help there either.

I wish I could say I've never mis-read anything. Well, I guess I could SAY it. Wouldn't be true, though...
Anyway, fwiw, if you said there WERE a difference, I'd believe you. I know you write about what you know and if you say it, it's 'cause you "been there - done that".
You've got me a little worried, though. I've got a 26" 7mm Rem Mag rifle barrel for my Encore. My handloads are 140 gr. Rem Core-Lokts at a little over 3300 fps. Only trouble I ever had with that load was when I had a little oil in the chamber and experience some serious set-back and hard opening.
Think maybe I'm pushing the envelope here? I'm using 70 gr. RL-22, which Alliant publishes as a max charge. I worked up to it slowly and have no extraction problems or pressure signs as long as the chamber is dry. Thanks.

Jon, Never intended to scare you. Nothing wrong with a WM or RM in a Encore. A number of years ago when the Encore had just been out a short time I bought one and had Bullberry make me a 338 WM 16-17" (can't remember for sure). It was an intended elk rig. I assumed I could drive it like you would a bolt rig. I ran into all kinds of problems. Fred fixed everyone of them. I was very frustrated and it didn't meet my accuracy requirements (1/2 MOA). I sold it to a gentlemen who has killed a number of large game using factory ammo with no problems. I learned a lot of lessons in the process. My action was flexing so much that I was having case head seperations on the 2nd or 3rd firing. Using Barnes X bulets I'm sure didn't help (used Noslers later though) I was also running max loads ( I did work up to them in .5 grain increments. I'm not a pressure expert, but if you are staying within the guidlines and not having case stretch, loosening primers, difficult openings, correct shoulder bump, etc. you should be okay. Sounds like you are at max but safe as long as you keep it clean/dry.

I guess no one has chronographed any loads?

bm, I will be shooting a 7RM Imp from a 18" barrel in a couple of months, but I sure don't have any data for you now. You could go to the specialty pistol website as I think several have a 7RM. Or you could look at regular 7RM rifle perforamnce and subtract around 300fps and you would be fairly close.

Do you think that is all? My friend chronied his 25/06 and he lost 500fps off factory listed speeds. This was across the board ie; bullet weight and brands w/ 2 different 15" barrels. If I lost only 300fps I'd jump for joy! That's why I wanted actual chronied speeds.

Hey Ok , Here we go , 16" encore muzzle break 8' from muzzle 35-50 degrees win 150 power point + 26" rifle 3150 avg 16" pistol 2650 rem 150 core-lokt 3100 2500 win 160 fail safe 2900 2550 And when you handload the lighter bullets you really lose velocity . 120 nosler RL 19 26" 3570 16" 2890 IMR 4895 3580 2950 I found this round as well as the 300 win mag in pistol length barrels you reach a point where you start blowing powder out the end of the barrel and you stop adding velocity . Thats why ( in my oppinion )the 7mm08 can equal the 7mm mag in a 16" gun , the same is true with the 300 win mag and the 308. I don't know if this helped you , but you boke my boredom for about 5 mins.

FWIW, I get about 2800 fps from 120 gr. bullet in my 15" 7mm-08 with Varget. So yeah, at least with lighter bullets, it doesn't look like you'd gain anything with the 7-Mag.

Bear in mind that factory listed velocities are ALWAYS on the high side of reality, by at least 100 fps in my experiences. So if you do the math, 30 fps per inch plus 100 you will be close.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Just to muddy the waters a little...my 7mm-270WSM XP-100 shoots the Nosler 160gr Accubond to just under 2800fps and the 162gr Hornady A-Max to 2825fps. This is from a 17" length barrel.
