I love my DW 445. It likes AA1680 and Sierra 300gr JSP. I also had an Enocre barrel in 445 for a while. It shot the Rem bulk 240gr SJHP well with H110 at 2,000 fps from a 12" tube.

Is the recoil comparable to the .460/.500?

In my opnion the recoil is less than the 460 or 500. The 445 is loaded at lower pressures and the DW is almost the same size as the X-frame Smiths.

The DW 445 is on top and the 500 S&W below. The 500 is a little bigger than the 445 but not by much.

I've never shot a 460.......I have shot 2 500s......the first was one of the early guns with the long ported barrel shooting CorBon ammo.......in my opinion, a hot loaded 240 in my 8" Dan Wesson 445 had worse recoil......the second 500 belongs to a friend, it has the short barrel (4"?) and we were shooting 600 grain cast bullet in it.......recoil was REALLY NASTY.......

If you can handle the 500 with factory loads, then the 445 shouldn't be a problem for you......especially if it has the 8" full lug barrel like Tigger's.......

Thanks for the help! My primary hunting weapon is the .460 but I am looking for something that I can shoot freehand with good accuracy. The .460 is outstanding, but only with a bag or other rest. Guess I better reconsider the 629 Classic.

You can always shoot 44 mags in it or download the 445 slightly......I'd definitely choose the Dan Wesson over the 629.......

I will have to vote for the DW 445 supermag. Look at my handle. I guess I am biased a bit but who isn't about their favorite guns. I love my DW and wont ever get rid of it. Accurate and well made and being able to change barrels at whim is unbelieveable. You can go out with a 10" scoped 445 loaded with 320 Gr WFNGC at 1450+ fps as a primary weapon or change it to a 4 or 6" compensated version as a backup or woods gun. Its extremly accurate and powerful. But being able to change barrels out puts it on the must have list. What a gun. You will not be sorry about getting one. BUt look on the net guns america or gunbrokers for used ones as they don't hold value well which is good for us as we get bargins.

Best of luck

Brian
