You don't have to be deceased to have an "Invitational" do you?? I hope not...think that would called a "Memorial"!!

Anyhoo...some copper slinging handgunners gathered today near Armagh, PA to test their wits ( ??) against a mighty army of yellow milk jugs! After heaps of primers were fired and mountains of powder burned...the handgunners prevailed!!

Bullelksniffer (Gerry) and his compadre Greg, jimmylee, Ed P and I threw most everything we had downrange to battle the mighty foe. And learned a few things along the way. I used mainly my .222 Rem Mag Imp XP-100 (50gr VM at 3100fps), .250 Savage Improved XP-100 (100gr SMK at 2680fps) and 7mm-270WSM XP-100(162gr A-Max at 2825fps....AKA Lil'Monster). Ed used a .221FB XP-100 and Encore .260 Rem. Jimmylee used a 22-250 Encore, Striker 7mm-08 and not sure what else. Gerry and Greg used a Striker 7mm-08, .223 (I think) and Encore .270 Win.

.....200yds is too close for milk jugs and specialty pistols!! 'cept for Gerry's Encore .270 Win...it seemed to bounce off...

.....after 200yds, the 300yds jugs were not hard at all...hot .22's, mild 7mm-08 and .260 made quick work on the jugs.

.....next was 330yds. The .222 Rem Mag Imp was still on track and shooting well. Ed and his .260 were starting to gain some ground with the holdovers. Jimmylee w/ the 7mm-08 was popping plastic. Then...Gerry...hmmm...not sure what he was shooting...but him and Greg managed to break a few along the way.

.....then came 400yds!! We all learned quickly that you should NOT stand at 400yds and let Ed shoot at you with his Encore .260 Remmy. You are fine at 300yds , but NOT at 400!! He hit on dang near every shot for about 7 rounds in a row!!

.....at 500yds we were all playing with the wind. Not sure about the other fellas...but I have a tough time aiming where there is no target!! With the 7mm-270WSM my hold was a mere 1-2" off the jug...but it's still tough to make myself do!! Gerry took a seat behind the Lil'Monster and made a first connection at 500yds. Ed took up the .250 Savage Improved XP-100 and made an awesome first shot connection with it at 500yds.

Took quite a few pics...will upload them on Wednesday. Heading to bed. Others can add details about what they learned/enjoyed as they arrive home. Later.....

Yes it was cool. I was shooting a Striker 7-08 with 140 Noslers, and Encore barrels in 223, 243 and 270. I wish I had more 7-08's with me though cuz as I recall, the me and the 7-08 didn't really miss until we got to 500. 6x magnification just don't cut it. I am still trying to figure out how Ed missed the close ones and waffled the far away ones? We have to get Greg his own rig. It's no fun loading for two guys! Now I have do all my own loading again! I just placed an order for a Burris 3x12 bal Plex-Dans scope proved it to me. I'm putting my Big Leupold 6x18 Target on my 7-08, the 3x-12x will go on my 308, and I am buying the Burris 12x target for my 223. I was taking the Leupold 12x dot if Dan didn't. Gosh, it's fun to blow things up even if they are plastic! Dan, did the yellow colored bottles reflect the French, Chinese or just cowards? As I recall, I even blew two up that were trying to hide behind a berm.

Dan, Thanks for hosting a great shoot. It will be on my must do list from now on. We did burn up some powder. I forgot my elbow pads, so I used the floor mat out of my jeep to rest my elbows on. I now have carpet burns on my elbows from all the shooting we did. Lunch was great, and I got to meet a good bunch of fellow handgunners. Next year I'll leave the Fireball at home, and shoot all ranges with the .260.

Ed, if I had known you were bringing that Hi-Tec plastic pistol, I'd have brought mine! 221, 222 and 223 three of my favories! Not the best for long shots on windy days huh? I've always been enamored with the 260 since it came out, but I already have a 243 and a 7-08. I still can't decide between the 260 and 6.5x55 because I already have so much brass for the Swede, but your gun and load helped a little. I really enjoy the shoots Dan puts on because it is usually attended by hardcore handgunners who are willing to teach. I've been shooting them alot and I still learn something from the guys and from Dan. This year I learned what wind can really do and I also learned that Dan isn't as great as he writes about!! He has some neat toys though; that's why I allow him to set up these shoots! He has one fine collection of XP's. I wish we could find a big, hog laden field for us to sit and watch Dan miss real targets. I know, he'd just complain about not liking to hold the cross-hairs off the hog, trying to dope the wind! Fantastice time shooting with guys and I can't wait for the next one. In the mean time, I'll kep reading your hunting stories in the 'Sixgunner'!

Jerry,
Since this was my first year shooting woth you guys, I'll refrain from sayiing anything about Dan's shooting ability.
You heard the old saying, whatch out for the man with one gun? I think, I'm not sure but it has to be just the opposite for the man who shoots a lot of different ones.
Ed

Oh Ed I hear that, but Dan deserves a little ribbing! He brings it on himself. Besides, Dan has about 100 or so guns, so he is not the proverbial 'one gun guy' you talk about. He does know his and he can shoot though! He knows it's all in jest. That's why he makes fun of me for being short. Dan's been priveleged by the newest Brady Bill in '94 when they decided to allow Neanderthal man to buy XP's! He ranks up there some of the best I've shot with, and to top it off, most of those I shoot with make fun of me because I do it with a handgun! I do the CMP high power rifle for the bonding thing. It's what's neat about the guys who show up for this shoot here in the East. I haven't met a slouch yet. Bottom line is when the bottom falls out of the country, most of us will use out really good handguns to fight our way to a good rifle!

Isn't that what we're s'posed to do? Someone/s (us) will have to show the others what must be done!

Wow...a guy steps out of town for two days after inviting a bunch of strangers to his home range, setting up the range, getting the grub, clean up after all'yawl and all he gets is hammered!! I see jimmylee kept his nose clean of this conversation...he knows better!! He's priviledged enough to shoot with me often and apparently wants to keep it that way!!

Back to the range results though...that .260 of Ed's was wicked awesome!! I may have a 6.5 for next year. But first I'll run that lil'.250 SAI a little harder and see what it'll do...got five firings on the brass now and pockets are still good.

At 500yds the optics are definately the biggest hinderance to being able to connect with a handgun. But even great optics won't make a sub-cal beat the wind at 350+yds...the .22's showed that perfectly well.

Glad you all had fun...sure know I did!! Now you have time to get more ammo loaded and the kinks worked out for next year. I should have the pics uploaded this evening.

Dan,
Sounds like you have some good friends to shoot with
If they didn't love ya-they wouldn't be picking on you
What did you tell me about sabotaging their SP's next time they come
Wished we were closer as it would have been great to have been there.
I expected the 6.5 bug to start gnawing on you soon
I agree on the optics being very important.
For the LER's the 3-12 Burris is top's.
