Hey Ernie, what's the secret to using a high powered rifle scope on an Encore or a Striker in 7-08 or 308? I have a Leupold 6x-18x Target AO that I want to use but it seems so darn close to my eye. I can get behind it a look through it from what I thnk is a safe distance, but the filed of vision isn't more than a dime sized hole. I read once a long time ago in the Sixgunner that SSK knows how to change the eye relief on the big rifle scopes. Ever hear about that? I have a bunch of Simmons, Redfield and Bausch and Lomb big vairables with Target knobs and AO and I'd like to use them.

Sit close and relax your grip hand. It's only a 7mm-08. You'll be fine....trust me!!!

I'll let you know in the next couple of days. I'm putting one on my 7-08 Striker now that I have the Holland QD brake on it! It should be fun. I know it's not exactly the same...but I put one on my TC 218 Bee 15" MGM barrel...MAN what a difference it makes on shooting that thing! You feel like you could reach out and touch the target!

I don't know anything about SSK having the ability to modify scopes this way. ONly man I know who does this is Wally Siebert and only on 24x and 36x Leupold's.

The key to using a rifle scope on a SP regardless of weight and or recoil is that you do not see a full FOV.
How much of a FOV you have is dependent on several things:
1. The eye relief of the scope in question. Leupold typically has the best/longest eye relief. Well Nightforce is better but that is even more expensive.
2. The recoil of your SP the way you hold it.
This is key, especially when you change up your position and change your hold to a lighter grip whne you were riding a fine line of being to close to begin with-SMACK
3. Have someone watch you shoot with your typical style and have them measure the amount of movement you have with the ocular of your scope toward your face over several shots.
That will let you know on average how far it is moving and therefore how close you can SAFELY get.
4. You will get used to seeing a partial view.
The trick is I start off seeing a full FOV, then back off before I shoot. The KEY is to remember to back off each time. There is a tendency to want to see a full FOV and slowly being inching forward-this can cause you pain.
5. Good Muzzle Brakes

Well, yer 'bout ta find out! we'll see tomorrow, or maybe not if my eye is too sore or black and blue. I put a Nikon 3 x9 AO Balistic Plex on my Striker 7-08 and a 4x12 Simmons Expedition AO with target knobs on my Encore 7-08. Both seem to have 'O-K' eye relief while sitting at a bench and the Encore is braked and seems heavy enough to reduce recoil. The Striker seems heavy enough with the Harris BP attached. I'm thinking of wrapping my sling around a sandbag at the front swivel and let the gun recoil against it until I get used to shooting with my eyes closed and flinching! I will let everyone know tomorrow or Sunday.

Ernie, by the way, if I give you bullet and velocities, and plex subtensions, can your Bal program give me trajectory and drop for my Nikon Bal-Plex? I'm shooting .284 140gr Nosler balistic tips over 40gr Rel 15. On an 85 degree day, I get about 2550fps with it. What would a 120gr ~100fps faster gain or lose for me at 5 or 600yd? Anything

Gerry,
I added 150 fps to the 120 grain NBT over the 140 grain load and the 140 grain load beat the 120 bullet by 2" in a 10mph wind.
the 120NBT had 5" less drop @ 500 though.
Exbal does not show Nikon's plex reticle, so I would need the subtension @ the correct magniifcation to give you accurate figures.

Ernie, at 9X the subtensions at 100 values in order or drop below cross hair: Distance between Horizontal = 8"
1 = 2"
2 = 4.5"
3 = 7"
4 = 11"
5 = 15" (top of bottom post)

Thanks, Gerry

Thanks, I will work on that unless someone beats me to it.

Very well from a rest or bench. I decided to keep my Striker 7-08 as a bench gun with the Nikon, and use the Encore with my Leupold as mu hunting piece. More later..

Reminds me of the time one of my buddies wanted to shoot my 7mm-08 Encore. I have a Leupold 2.5-8 EER scope on it. Anyway the long-gunner raised it up nice and close like you would a rifle scope (about 3 inches from his eye, I don't know how he could see out of it) with a nice light grip. Before I could scream NOOOOOOO!!!!! he pulled the trigger . Its amazing how much a person can bleed from a half-moon slice on his forehead!!! Poor guy. He has never asked to shoot another of my pistols!!! I think I'll refrain from putting a rifle scope on anything heftier than a 22.

May the Sun be at your back, the Wind in your face, and the Trophy in your Crosshairs!

A 140 NBT @ 2550 zeroed @ 100 yds with the subtensions you gave me:
Bar #1 188 yds
Bar #2 271 yds
Bar #3 345 yds
Bar #4 450 yds
Bar #5 544 yds

I set elevation @ 450 feet.

I saved the info on Exbal so I can access it quick if I need to re-figure anything.
