No doubt that is one big hog. But looks like the boy is a few feet back from it making it look even bigger.

Here is the link from AOL news on this hog. They say he killed it with a .50cal handgun. Hope the link works.

I'm happy for the kid, but dissapointed in the adult that was with him (haven't read the story). 8 shots over a period of 3 hrs. Even my wife who's as pro-hunting as they come quickly saw a problem with that when she saw it on Fox News last night. Someone should have put the pig down sooner, or at least kept their mouth shut about the number of shots & the time taken in the killing. Doesn't sound good to a non-hunting public.

I have some mixed feelings or opinions on this situation. I love the idea that a young person is out hunting with family and carrying on with a tradition. It is what our passion needs in this time of X-Box and Ninetendo.
On the other hand, I don't think that a kid at that age should be shooting such a specialty revolver. In my opinion, it is too much gun for a person of that age. That is evident by the number of shots taken to drop the animal.
In my opinion if the young man were my son and wanted to take up handgun hunting , I would have set up something different. It would have been a TC Contender/G2 in say 357 Max or 44 magnum with a muzzle brake, scoped and he would have been practicing for a long time before going afield.

That's is some pig!!!!! Hopefully, it's the real deal and not some publicity stunt. I agree the hog should have been put down sooner.
But again a 50 caliber handgun should be able to do the job if the bullet is put in the right spot. I will assume this is a 500 S&W.

Typical news media frenzy, take a story blow it all out of proportion making sure it gets on every wire and goes viral on the internet and then magically the "truth" comes out and then there is a fiesta for the anti hunters to show what hunting is really like...shooting tame animals in a 150 acre enclosure.
By the way I edited a couple of posts above to clean up the URL links so it didn't blow out the page. No comment text was changed.

Well... Despite all the negative press and theorizing about how well the boy shot the hog or whether or not he should have been allowed to handle a 500.... I sure wish it'd been ME when I was 11yrs old!!! That's a lifetime full of memories for that young man. The WOW factor is pretty much off the charts. You guys are just jealous... $bob$

I agree with your assessment for the most part that a 500 is too much gun for an 11-year old in general, and it's unfortunate that it was reported to have taken several shots to kill the pig. It's unfair however for us to judge the young man's ability with a handgun until we've actually seen him shoot one. By his age we know he's a relatively inexperienced hunter. It could be he performs well enough on paper but when it came to the excitement of the hunt he wasn't quite as steady and made a poor first shot.

this has been running pretty hot over on the Handgun Hunting forum at AR. I was not there and anything I have to say is speculative. I will however say this with some experience; sometimes, large game takes some killing. I know good shots who have taken bison after numerous hits and hours of chasing to finish off the animal. Even Elmer Keith had a time with his billy goat.

True enough as well Rob. I had a time with an aoudad a few years ago shot with a 375 JDJ. Shot went a little high into no mans land and I found him and finished him off after about 4 hours. The animal may well have survived if infection didn't get him and I hadn't found him. The bullet went over the lungs and under the spine.

I agree with JD, it definetly looks like the kid is sitting back a bit from the hog. Don't know why though because it is obviously a big pig no matter where he is sitting.

So it was an execution and not a hunt. I knew that story smelled funny right off. It sure raised a ruckus, even made ESPN. Not good for us though, I think. They say any pub is good pub, but pub like this will merely fuel the anti's, and cast a dark shadow on all of us. JMO, Rod.
